Connected GPS - Garmin nuvi 1690 with nuLink : Issues
Post on 06 November 2009 at 18:49:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 6th, 2009
The first "connected GPS" that seemed to be well armed to break through thanks to its virtually unlimited "data plan" (2 years bundled with the unit) is having some issues. More reports are coming from users with sreen problems (models manufactured before October 16th) or of freezes, reboots, prompting returns...More details in the Nuvi 1690 GPS with nüLink - User Reviews topic of the nuvi forums.

Updated October 14th, 2009 - While a "connected GPS" (built-in GPRS module with SIM card) looks good on paper with its permanent access to live data, their history (available below) is littered with failures (Dash, BestBuy Insignia), cancelled models (Magellan 5340) or half-hearted efforts (TomTom GO 740). Is this about to change with the Garmin nuvi 1690 that has been available for a few days ? First reports from the road by...

MSN Direct to fold in 2012 - Get a Refund for Garmin GPS Subscription
Post on 30 October 2009 at 14:22:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated October 30th, 2009
The recent launch of the nuLink Service for the nuvi 1690 and nuvifone cast a shadow on the future of the MSN Direct service transmitted over FM. We'll never know if Garmin moved away from MSN Direct because they knew of its upcoming demise or whether MSN Direct called it a day because Garmin moved on, but the bottom line is that the MSN Direct service available on the nuvi x8x models will fold in 2012.

Originally the service was guaranteed until the end of 2011 so there is a slight "bonus". MSN Direct are also doing the right thing by offering a refund to recent subscribers while allowing them access until it folds. More details in the No more MSN Direct after 2012 topic of the Garmin nuvi forums.

Updated January 14th, 2008 - Wile it was the buzz of the 2008 CES show, "connected GPS" navigation is nothing new, it first started with the low bandwidth RDS FM for simple trafic information, then GPRS for Traffic and last spring Garmin introduced MSN Direct on the nüvi 680 and SP 580 models. Traffic was improved with traffic flow data in some areas and it added Gas prices, weather reports and movie listings. Now Garmin are launching MSN Direct v2 with enhanced features such as stock prices, news, local events and a send to GPS feature. Unfortunately...

Navteq Traffic : Coming to Europe - GPS Probes - Mobile Millenium
Post on 24 September 2009 at 14:07:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated September 24th, 2009
Navteq Traffic was launched successfully in the US last year on the Garmin 765 AIOs with an unusual model, free for users thanks to unobtrusive advertising. Navteq have plans for Europe too and they're serious about them as evidenced by their purchase earlier this year of the Deutsche Telekom division that created the TMC Pro service in Germany.

Another interesting development is their use of "GPS Probes" to mitigate the problems of traffic generated by "GSM Traces" as experienced by the users of TomTom's HD Traffic in Europe. They are currently experimenting with these traffic creation techniques in the Mobile Millenium program. I was able to discuss these interesting developments with the today at the Navivision event in Paris. More details in the Navteq launch Traffic in Europe and GPS Probes topic of the "Traffic Information" forums.

Updated November 6th 2006 - Traffic information is a "hot topic" among GPS users who fight traffic day-in day-out, and while the big Traffic related "financial" news today is the purchase of Traffic.com by Navteq of course, the big "user" news is the launch of Traffic.com's WAP Portal that works particularly well on Windows Mobile Smartphones and PDAPhones. It appears to be quite a powerful and convenient solution especially in combination with the Traffic.com portal. Create your "Drives" and have them send you emails, RSS alerts or...

GO 740 LIVE Connected GPS : Road Trip in the USA Report
Post on 23 July 2009 at 15:56:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated July 23rd, 2009
After first being released in Europe at the end of last year, the GO 740 Live connected GPS (built-in GSM module) made it to the US, but without the novel "HD Traffic" generated from "GSM traces". Probably just as well since it has failed to convince in Europe compared to the standard Traffic via RDS/FM. But how does it peform on the road ?

That's where forum member "Sellador" commes in with his [REPORT] Tom Tom Go 740 Live On the Road> topic in the "TomTom AIO Forums - www.GOTomTom.com" forums. Coming from Garmin and Magellan GPS systems he was quite impressed by the GO 740 Live during his long trip around the mid-Atlantic and northeastern US.

Updated Februray 2nd, 2009 - TomTom first launched the GO Live x40 models in Europe late last year and said at the time that they had no date for a US launch. It was assumed that they were trying to lock a deal with a mobile carrier to provide the same type of HD Traffic service as in Europe. The GO Live 740 will be available in the US, but without "HD Traffic", the built-in GPRS/SIM modules are only used for easy access to the LIVE services, such as Google Local, Weather, Buddy, QuickFix...

Traffic Info in North America - XM, MSN, TMC, Shotgun Comparisons !
Post on 02 April 2009 at 16:36:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated April 2nd, 2009
Longtime forum member, Mort, has been on a mission to find the best possible traffic information service available on GPS systems. He ran some first comparisons in 2006, quickly picking the Garmin SP 7200 with XM Navtraffic, then pitted it against MSN Direct and Dash in May of last year, and it stayed on top.

Fast forward to March 2009 and he revisited this comparison using MSN, TMC and the internet connected Telenav Shotgun. Well as far as he's concerned on his Los Angeles routes, XM NavTraffic is still what he wants. You can join us in the XM vs. Dash, MSN, TMC, & Connected GPS - 04/2009 of the "Traffic Information" to discuss.

Updated July 16th, 2007 - After being launched in Europe in 2002 and in the US in 2005, Traffic information via RDS TMC is now available in Canada and forum member traffinfo has ben experimenting with the hidden menus of his Garmin C550...

TeleNav build on Mobile GPS experience for Connected Shotgun PND
Post on 10 November 2008 at 16:09:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 10th, 2008
TeleNav caught everyone by surprise on Friday when they launched the TeleNav Shotgun connected PND. This is unexpected because it was announced last week that the Dash Express, the connected PND poster child, was being terminated.

Contrary to Dash and deCarta (powers BestBuy's Insignia), TeleNav have a lot of "consumer GPS" experience thanks to their Mobile GPS software available since 2005, assuming they're using the same navigation engine. The map rendering doesn't look "great" though compared to Garmin's or TomTom's especially that 2D vehicle arrow...Let's wish them good luck, but the pricing might be a problem, $299 upfront is reasonable but $12/month or $130/year for the service paln not so much, they'll really have to offer much better traffic than Garmin's RDS or MSN to pull it off. You can use this topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated February 1st, 2006 - After Garmin and Telenav's solutions that some visitors tested side by side (see below), here's another competitor on this "off-board" market, Verizon's VZ Navigator. Monthly pricing is similar at $10 per month but they have added a one day $3 option that could come in handy on the occasional trip even for regular GPS users in case their "on-board" setup lets them down.....

TomTom GPS - HD Traffic Receiver with GPRS cleared by FCC
Post on 20 August 2008 at 13:46:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated August 20th, 2008
With the prices of GPS systems still in "free falling" mode, in Q2/2008 the market doubled compared to Q2/2007 but the overall value only went up 20%, manufacturers are working hard to come up with "value added" features and TomTom is pulling "HD Traffic" out of its sleeve. It is already available in Holland and the US could be next based on the recent FCC approval of the device.

Unlike current Traffic receiver that use the limited RDS/FM TMC technology, the HD Traffic receiver includes a GPRS module with a SIM card for permanent and unlimited communication with the TomTom servers. The idea is to receive reports from the road, consolidate them and broadcast them to all users, like TomTom do for IQ Routes except this time it is live. This is reminiscent of what the Dash Express does, but TomTom can leverage millions of users to generate more reliable information. You can use this topic of the www.GOtomtom.com forums on GpsPasSion to discuss the upcoming HD Traffic receiver and related technology.

Updated June 23rd, 2008 - TomTom have a new RDS TMC Traffic receiver, the USB Traffic Receiver marketed specifically for the new ONE v4 (ONE 130) and ONE XL v2 (ONE 330) GPS systems, but it's also compatible with the GO x20 and x30 series. While it may seem convenient with its standard miniUSB connector, the built-in car charger connector is awkwardly placed...

Mio adds TMC to GPS systems in the USA - Free 90 day Trial
Post on 19 October 2007 at 14:54:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated October 19th, 2007
After making a splash with the C310x, the "Black Friday" star of 2006, Mio have been building up their brand image with new models such as the advanced C520 wih split screen this summer and more recently the C720T with a built-in camera and RDS TMC traffic receiver.

To complement the TMC hardware, Mio are now making the TMC service available with a free 90 day trial. The question is whether C520 users will be able to purchase the TMC cradle and sign up for the service. You can use this thread of the Mio forums to discuss.

Posted Februray 1st, 2004 - What's interesting with GPS Assisted Navigation, is that there are always new subjects to discover! I've been testing Business Mobile Navigator by Navigon, and I'm quite impressed with the way TMC data is integrated and managed to make the life of the driver easier. The concept is simple enough: collect traffic info and then build an itinerary that takes it into account. Read about it in detail...

Traffic on SmartPhones - Inrix launch Real-Time and Predictive on WM - No GPS
Post on 28 March 2007 at 11:18:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated March 28th, 2007
Inrix have just released an application for Windows Mobile devices (PDAPhone and Smartphone) that displays real-time and predictive traffic information in 60 markets in the US. Click here for the full PR.

While the addition of predictive traffic is an interesting development, unlike the recent off-board mapping related applications with RT trafic offered by Google and Microsoft, it's not free, and they charge a fairly steep $40 per year. Besides, the lack of GPS compatibility will make it mostly useful for people who know the area well. You can use this thread of the "News" forums to discuss.

Updated November 7th, 2005 - Traffic information on GPS systems is certainly the "hot topic" of the moment when it comes to GPS Assisted Navigation with the launch of the ClearChannel FM/RDS TMC broadcasts and their integration in units by Garmin and Cobra (read some first comparisons here) but Smartphones are certainly a "natural" for traffic integration and a new solution by Traffic Vizzion looks interesting...

New "Traffic information" and "Dead Reckoning" GPS
Post on 08 March 2005 at 22:02:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updates 03/08/05
Here come the first new GPS related products of the 2005 CeBIT (keep track of it in GpsPasSion Live ! later on this week). They will be of special interest to the European visitors of the site as they are TMC based devices - the "Traffic Messaging Channel" is the standard to broadcast traffic information over FM in Europe. They are being offered by GNS, the specialists in this area, starting with the GNS 5840 Bluetooth GPS and the GNS FM9 FM antenna. This antenna can be added to an existing GPS system to intergrat traffic information. As Navigon and GNS are long time partners, it's likely that software will be adapted for use with this antenna.

According to PocketNavigation.de, GNS will also be introducing the first prototype of a "mouse" GPS integrating a "Dead Reckoning" module. Let's hope that it will be more efficient than the accelorometer found in the TomTom GO to allow for continued tracking in tunnels.

You can catch up >>with this thread<< in the forums to discuss.
