Garmin GPS - New CityNavigator NT 2010.30 Maps Available in America
Post on 20 November 2009 at 01:04:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated November 20th, 2009 Garmin have just released the fourth quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.30". These new maps are only available for North America for the time being and could either be based on the Navteq Q2/2009 or the Q3/2009 release.
The CN NT2010.30 maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.30 Maps - Released 11/09 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums.
Updated October 21st, 2009 - Good things come to those who wait...so at this point European nuMaps Lifetime subscribers or recent buyers entitled to the nuMaps Guarantee will likely just be happy to download the City Navigator NT 2010.20 maps, albeit three months after the North American users...

Magellan for iPhone : Roadmate "OneTouch" and Car Kit with GPS
Post on 16 November 2009 at 17:02:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Posted November 16th, 2009 Well it seems we're not quite done with iPhone news after all and it is now Magellan's turn to announce the availability of an iPhone GPS application : Magellan Roadmate 2010, for North America only at this time. They have also pre-announced a Car Kit with GPS like TomTom's but that adds compatibility with the iPod Touch.
Things are certainly picking up for Magellan since they were bought by MiTac last year with successful new PNDs (the Maestro 4700 or the Roadmate 1470) and now an iPhone application and a Car kit with GPS. Back to the glorious Palm days when they had a similar combo ! Unfortunately, like the GPS apps launched earlier, the iPhone app fails to leverage the iPhone's connectivity and there is a disclaimer not to use the 2D mode on the 3G...You can use the Magellan Roadmate for iPhone + Car Kit topic of the www.smartphoneGPS.com forums to discuss.
Updated November 2nd, 2007 - After a long wait map upgrades are now available for most of the Magellan Roadmate line-up, i.e. the 800, 860, 3000, 3050T and 6000T, or should we say "almost" since the Software Upgrade Version 2 pages have been temporarily taken off-line, apparently because of Vista misbehaving...

New Magellan Roadmate 4700 GPS - User Reviews and Wishlist
Post on 19 October 2009 at 16:25:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 19th, 2009 While Magellan road systems have disappeared in Europe following the sale of Magellan by Shah Capital to Mitac (parent company of Mio), new models are still being released in the USA, likely to capitalize on the strong Magellan brand name and who originally "owned" the road GPS market with their Roadmate 500 and 700 in...2004. The latest model is the Maestro 4700 that appears to be based on the "New Gen" Magellan software, unlike the Maestro 4350/4370 based on the iGo 8 software...
The Magellan 4700 has already met with quite some success among forum members and they are sharing their thoughts in the Magellan Maestro 4700 - User Reviews topic with current problems being bugs when routing to Florida, a weak voice-command feature and ads displayed with traffic information. Forum member jerryoster has also started a * Masetro 4700 Wish List * topic in the "Magellan Roadmate and Maestro AIOs" forums.
Updated April 27th, 2009 - This just in, longtime forum member corgi1 received his Magellan 1470 last Friday and has been putting it through its paces since then, so far so good. He also pitted it against his Garmin nuvi 680 and he is kindly sharing his list of "pros and cons" and pictures in the Magellan 1340, 1440, 1470 - User Reviews topic of the Magellan forums. The question of the GPS engine being used is...

New Navigon GPS systems in Europe with LIVE and RealCity 3D - 8410
Post on 12 October 2009 at 15:32:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 12th, 2009 While US Navigon users are still wondering if they will receive more updates under the FreshMaps subscription they purchased (CS says "No", CEO says "short backlog"), Europe is getting a full range of new systems, the 14xx, 24xx, 63xx and 84xx.
The 24xx gets an electronic compass for better performance in pedestrian mode (a first on a road system), the 63xx and 84xx the LIVE option and the 8410/8450 get a 5" capacitive screen (like the iPhone) and RealCity3D, an impressive 3D modeling of 16 European cities. Comments and pictures in the Navigon 8410 GPS with LIVE and RealCity3D topic of the "All in One" Navigation Systems forums.
Updated May 22nd, 2009 - While Navigon's exit from the North American market is now confirmed, they are still supporting existing customers with the release today of the Navigon Fresh Q2/2009 map update via the Navigon Fresh software. As in the past there is a delay compared with Navteq's own dates, normally two quarters, but these maps could be...

Garmin's Guide for "Custom Raster Maps" - Colorado, Dakota, Oregon GPS
Post on 09 October 2009 at 16:09:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated November 29th, 2008 In the past we were the ones figuring out tricks to add topo maps to Garmin road units and that was limited to vector maps (see below for details), but Garmin surprised everyone yesterday when they published a method on their blog to import raster (i.e. pictures) maps into their latest handheld GPS receivers, the Colorado, Oregon and Dakota.
Amazingly enough, all it takes is a scanned paper map and...Google Earth, so it's likely some tool will quickly be available to convert existing Ozi maps (probably the most widespread format) to Garmin compatible maps. In the meantime you can use the Garmin's Guide for "Custom Raster Maps" of the "Handheld Portable GPS Receivers" to discuss and share tips.
Updated November 29th, 2008 - Forum member Boyd "does it again", after sharing a tip to navigate with topo maps on his SP2620 four years ago, he just found a way to add contour lines from topo maps to the standard City Navigator road maps used by the Garmin nüvi systems. This transparent layer can be easily toggled in the map settings. You can make your own contour maps by following the guide he posted in...

New TomTom XXL GPS 530S and 540S with 5" Screen
Post on 14 September 2009 at 16:06:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated September 14th, 2009 In a surprise move, TomTom have just announced the new XXL 530S and 540S GPS systems with a 5" screen. They are TomTom's systems with the largest screen so far (previously 4.3" on the GO and XL) and they are also TomTom's first specific hardware for the North American market (previously they had released XLs with TTS when it was not available in Europe).
Little is known so far, other than they feature IQ Routes (statistical speeds for more accurate routes and ETA, see the TESTING - TOMTOM'S IQR (Intelligent Routing) article for details), like the high-end GO models and the ONE and XL IQ Routes and XL LIVE in Europe. Based on the available pictures they do not appear to be using the new Navcore 9 platform premiered on the GO x50s earlier this month. The 540S model will also feature ALG (full screen static images of roadsigns on motorways), maps of Mexico in addition to US and Canadian maps, more POIs (7 million) and a black finish. They are due to become available in October. In the meantime you can use the TomTom XXL 530S and 540S with 5" screen topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.
Updated March 23rd, 2009 - TomTom had yet to announce a new mobile GPS device in 2009 (they announced the in-dash Renault Carminat TomTom and Toyota Yaris DUB1 in Europe at the Geneva car show), but here come the new ONE and ONE XL "IQ Routes" edition models, respectively the fifth and third models in the series. They clearly take after the ONE v4 and ONE XL v2 models launched in late April 2008, with the hardware part getting a black finish instead of last year's silver. The real change is...

Garmin GPS - nuvi 1xx0 Series with CityXplorer - Available and Tested
Post on 10 July 2009 at 15:09:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated July 10th, 2009 Garmin's new nuvi 1xxx entry level GPS systems with a difference, courtesy of the downloadable cityXplorer maps with transit system data, are now available, just in time for the summer trips. Check out the firs user reports like Don's in the nuvi 12xx/13xx/1490 - User Reviews topic of the "Garmin nüvi forums".
Updated May 25th, 2009 - The nuvi 1xxx (12xx, 13xx, 1490) series was announced at the CeBIT tradeshow in Hannover in March and should be available starting in June. I had the opportunity to visit the new Garmin France offices in Nanterre just outside Paris and was given a presentation of these new nuvis. I wasn't expecting a lot from these new entry level systems but came out quite impressed, by the hardware, the new map display and the new CityXplorer navigation mode, the first real pedestrian mode on a GPS system. You'll find pictures and comments in the [PREVIEWED] nuvi 12xx/13xx/1490 with CityXplorer topic of...

Free 2009 map update available for Mio Moov GPS - TeleAtlas 2008.10
Post on 10 June 2009 at 16:13:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated June 10th, 2009 The new Mio Spirit GPS systems will soon be available, but in the meantime Mio are staying busy with the Free 2009 Map Update for the Mio Moov and Knight Rider GPS systems originally announced for the end of May.
It is now available for download (the DVD version will wait until June 16th) and some forum members gave it a try...with mixed results. You can use the Mio Moov Free 2009 Map update available topic of the Mio forums to discuss.
Updated January 30th, 2009 - While Garmin, TomTom or Navigon enhance their navigation software wich each new release, Mio generally makes drastic changes...Keeping count, the upcoming "Spirit" software to be used on the Mio S series recently announced at the CES show in Las Vegas is the fifth version of MioMap since 2003 (Destinator in 2003, Navigon 4/5 in 2004/2005, iGO 2006/8 in 2006/2007, Navman in 2008) ! It's easy to confuse users with all these changes, especially since Mio generally does not offer an upgrade path, the iGo 2006 on the 26x+ being the exception. Spirit picks up from the Navman software inherited from the acquisition in 2007 of Navman by Mitac, the parent-company of Mio and used "as is" on the Moov series in 2008. The slightly dated Navman map display is back, but the interface has been entirely redesigned with iPhone like "sliding menus"...

Customizing your WinCE GPS AIO : MioPocket now in v3.0
Post on 02 June 2009 at 22:47:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated June 2nd, 2009 We've come a long way since the fist customization attempts were made on the Bluemedia and Mio AIOs in early 2005. Customizing being the action of gaining access to the operating system, WinCE in this case, to add new functionality such as movie players or Off-Road navigation software like OziCE.
In April 2008 forum member Osprey automated the manual steps involved with his MioPocket 2.0 package that went on to generate a 415 page topic in the forums! So for the arrival of MioPocket 3.0 he started a new topic that's already reached 12 pages. Join it before it grows any larger !
Updated January 1st, 2006 - Starting 2006 with a blast with the "customization" of the Magellan Roadmate 800 that can now be turned into a full WindowsCE4.2 mobile terminal (as were the MIOs and Medions earlier this year) with the ability to play DivX movies or be used for "Off-Road" GPS with 5Gb of room to spare to store maps and movies and an option to speed it up by 75% from 300Mhz to 530Mhz...
