GO 740 LIVE Connected GPS : Road Trip in the USA Report
Posté le 23 juillet 2009 à 15:56:00 par gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS

Updated July 23rd, 2009
After first being released in Europe at the end of last year, the GO 740 Live connected GPS (built-in GSM module) made it to the US, but without the novel "HD Traffic" generated from "GSM traces". Probably just as well since it has failed to convince in Europe compared to the standard Traffic via RDS/FM. But how does it peform on the road ?

That's where forum member "Sellador" commes in with his [REPORT] Tom Tom Go 740 Live On the Road> topic in the "TomTom AIO Forums - www.GOTomTom.com" forums. Coming from Garmin and Magellan GPS systems he was quite impressed by the GO 740 Live during his long trip around the mid-Atlantic and northeastern US.

Updated Februray 2nd, 2009 - TomTom first launched the GO Live x40 models in Europe late last year and said at the time that they had no date for a US launch. It was assumed that they were trying to lock a deal with a mobile carrier to provide the same type of HD Traffic service as in Europe. The GO Live 740 will be available in the US, but without "HD Traffic", the built-in GPRS/SIM modules are only used for easy access to the LIVE services, such as Google Local, Weather, Buddy, QuickFix...

...

On the one hand this might sound disappointing, but "HD Traffic" has really failed to meet expectations in Europe for now, even being sometimes less effective than the RDS TMC Traffic Information it was supposed to outclass, and the US version comes with one year of free access. There's also no denying that a cable-free (other than power) connected device is a pleaure to use. You can use the TomTom 940 - HD Traffic, Google - Testing topic of the www.GOtomtom section of the forums.

Updated November 14th, 2008 - The new TomTom GO x40 (740 and 940) GPS systems have started shipping in Europe. They are TomTom's first connected devices with their onboard GPRS module and SIM card...... They come with the "TomTom PLUS" services as we know them with the notable addition of Google Local Search, Gas Prices and of course "HD Traffic", TomTom's answer to the often inaccurate "Traffic over RDS". TomTom said they currently didn't have any plans to release them in the US.

A GO 940 made it today to the "GpsPasSion Labs" and I have started testing it and comparing it to the GO 920 and GO 930 reference systems. You will find pictures and first comments in [TOPIC] TomTom 940 - HD Traffic, Google - Testing of the www.GOtomtom section of the forums.

Posted September 2nd, 2008 - After the TomTom GO in 2004, the GO x00s (300/500/700) in 2005, the GO x10s (510/710/910) in 2006, the GO x20s (520/720/920) in 2007 and the GO x30s (530/730/930) earlier this yera, here comes the sixth generation of TomTom GO systems, the x40s LIVE with the 540, 740 and 940 models, see the TomTom website for the press release. At this point they are only announced in a few European countries (Holland, UK, Germany, France, Switzerland) as they require a phone carrier partner due to their "always connected" nature. TomTom recently cleared the HD Traffic receiver with the FCC so availability in the US...... should be next.

The groundbreaking feature on the x40 series is the built-in GPRS module with its SIM card to allow the device to be always connected to the network and the LIVE services : HD Traffic, Google Local Search, Live speedcam alerts, notably. This will come at a cost though, €10 per month after a three month trial period so the service will have to prove itself compared to the bundled RDS Traffic service. The x40s are also getting IQ Routes v2 (daily granularity in 5 minute increments), voice control and an active car holder. You can use you can use this topic of the www.GOtomtom section of the forums to discuss.
