GPS per Google : Google Maps Navigation launched for Android and USA

Updated October 28th, 2009
Oops, Google have done it again...the announcement of Google Maps Navigation while not entirely unexpected, sent the stocks of the GPS players tumbling down 20% today. Is this an overraction?

While the market is always right and Google have clearly spoilt us with great apps over the years, we should keep in mind that this is an "off-board" application with all the data stored on a remove server, not locally like on an AIO, so 3G (or even 3G+/HSDPA) will be required for the data rich content. Also only the Android platform is getting it for now and it's limited to the USA. You can use the Google Launches Threat to GPS & Maps Powers of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated February 25th, 2009 - Google regularly enhance their free geo-related applications and Google Maps Mobile has recently received the new Latitude feature that allows users to share their live position with friends. The position can be determined by various means, GSM, WiFi or GPS of course. It will even work in the background when you exit GMM, so make sure you turn it off for privacy...

...and if you don't want it to drain the battery of your Phone/PDAPhone/Smartphone! You can use the Google Maps Mobile v3 - Latitude with live sharing topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.

Updated February 10th, 2007 - Likely related to the upcoming 3GSM Show (it starts on Monday in Barcelona and will be covered on GpsPasSion), but after "Google Maps Mobile" last week, here come Microsoft's Windows Live Search and Nokia's smart2go mobile. All these applications offer free over the air (smart2go has a PC companion app too) map viewing, gps positionning, place search, and route calculation, but only...

... smart2go has a for-pay active GPS guidance option. You can discuss these new applications/services in their respective threads.

Posted February 3rd, 2007 - Ever since we got a taste of "Google Maps" on mobile platforms with Mobile GMaps in the summer of 2005 and then with various other applications such as Map4PDA or J2MEMap, we were looking forward to a native Windows Mobile version with GPS support. This is now a reality with Google's own application for WM5.0 that you can download directly from your PC with this link......Keep in mind that this is an "off-board" application, so your PDA will need to access the Google servers for maps, addresses, traffic and route calculation and use your bandwidth, not a problem with WiFi, but with GPRS/Edge/3G, your monthly allotment may get used up fast...

You can catch up with this thread of the forums for some first comments and screenshots.
