These new maps could either be based on the Navteq Q1/2010 or the Q2/2010 release and only seem to be available for North America (from 2011.10) at this time, let's hope Europe doesn't have to "sit it out" as for the 2010.40 release...

The CN NT2010.40 maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.40 Maps - Released 01/2010 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums to discuss.

Updated November 20th, 2009 - Garmin have just released the fourth quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.30". These new maps are only available...... for North America for the time being and could either be based on the Navteq Q2/2009 or the Q3/2009 release.

The CN NT2010.30 maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.30 Maps - Released 11/09 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums.

Updated October 21st, 2009 - Good things come to those who wait...so at this point European nuMaps Lifetime subscribers or recent buyers entitled to the nuMaps Guarantee will likely just be happy to download the City Navigator NT 2010.20 maps, albeit three months after the North American users......

Garmin clarified from the beginning that under nuMaps Lifetime, there would be "up to 4" quarterly updates per year...and naturally many assumed it would be 4. We'll soon find out if that holds true in the US, but it appears that the next update will become available in 2010. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.20 Maps - Released 07/09 + 10/09 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums.

Updated July 30th, 2009 - As expected, Garmin have released the third quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.20". These new maps are likely based on the Navteq Q1/2009 release...

Updated May 8th, 2009 - Garmin have just made their new CityXplorer maps avialable for download in the content download (Travel Guides, MAD Maps, Garage, etc...) section of their site. These new CityXplorer maps are based on Navteq's Discover Cities offering and are designed specifically for the nuvi 1xxx range of systems as they can take advantage of their unique pedestrian/public transit system mode...... Still, they are also compatible with older models where they will behave as the current road maps (address or POI search, route calculation, etc...) so this could come in handy if you're planning a trip to London or Paris and don't have European maps on your GPS, especially since their price is right at $15. You can use the Garmin cityXplorer maps (downloadable content) topic started by SergZak in the nuvi section of the forums to discuss.

Updated April 8th, 2009
As expected, Garmin have released the second quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program, but instead of being called 2009.2, it gets upgraded to "CityNavigator NT 2010". This might lead to some confusion among users, especially since these new maps are likely based on the Navteq Q4/2008 release.

These new maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010 Maps - Available 04/2009 topic of the nüvi forums.

Updated January 21st, 2009 - As was announced at CES, Garmin launched the nuMaps Lifetime program today with maps named 2009.1 (Navteq Q3/2008) available for download...

..., either via the Lifetime program or via the nuMaps Guarantee program for those who qualify. Time to freshen up your maps!

Updated January 7th, 2009 - The CES 2009 tradeshow is starting tomorrow in Las Vegas and Garmin have a lot in store for us (ecoRoute, nuvi 8x5, Zumo 660, Approach G5, etc...), but let's start with nuMaps Lifetime.

You read about it here first in early October of last year but it was delayed until 2009, until Jan 21st to be precise...... . As reported at the time, this program makes quarterly map (and POI) updates available for the life of Garmin nuvi systems for $119 for North America, $139 for Europe and $149 for both. Attracive pricing on paper...provided the price of GPS systems stops plunging! It is likely new maps will be available for download for everyone starting on Jan 21st, including under the nümaps Guarantee. You can use the Garmin "nüMaps Lifetime" Maps topic to discuss.

Updated October 2nd, 2008 - After announcing the nüMaps Guarantee last month, Garmin are completing their map offering with the "Lifetime Maps" program due to launch on October 15th. For $119 (€119 in Europe), subscribers will be able to download quarterly updates for their GPS system as long as they own it. Compared to other map update programs on the market it falls in between...... Navigons's $79/3 years Freshmaps and TomTom's €68/1 year Map Update Service (unavailable in the US at this time). While it appears like a good way to stay up to date at a reasonable price, some users might balk at the asking price in a GPS market with freefalling prices. You can use this topic of the Garmin forums to discuss.

Updated September 11th, 2008 - Garmin have just rolled out a new map update policy called nüMaps that entitles users to a free map update if new maps become available within 60 days of the first use of their system. "First use" being determined by the GPS module getting a fix and the system being used for thirty seconds at a speed of at least 20 kph...

This is 30 days better than TomTom's guarantee but with Garmin's yearly updates it didn't seem very advantageous. The good news is that Garmin are preparing a new quarterly map update program that will allow users to download regular updates once the guarantee has lapsed. More details in this topic of the nüvi forums.

Updated April 11th, 2008 - Garmin have just rolled new maps in North America and Europe, City Navigator 2009 and City Navigator 2008, respectively. A bit confusing, particularly since they are both based on Navteq 2007 maps, while CN 2008 North America used Navteq 2006 maps......The good news is that there are some new features such as speed limits on secondary roads or branded POI icons. Click here to see if you are entitled to a free ugrade and you can use this topic of the nüvi forums or this topic of the Street Pilot forums to discuss.

Updated December 3rd, 2007 - Garmin have just rolled out version 3.00 of the software for their units equipped with the "Type G Chipset", their internal name for the SiRFstarIII chipset apparently, since that update corresponds to SiRF's latest v3.2.5 firmware. As can be seen in this summary topic, this is the first appearance of SiRF's latest software. Since the latest v3.2.4 version released last year, improvements include better jamming mitigation and enhanced ephemeris collection in difficult environments, something that helps to get a "warm fix" in the morning. You can use this thread of the forums to discuss...

Updated August 23rd, 2007 - Again some good news and some bad news on the Garmin Map Upgrade front. Starting with the good news, it seems that they have given up on the new update policy started on June 1st and that a GPS system purchased after new maps were announced is again entitled to a free map upgrade. Kudos for reinstating the old policy even if a lot of time and energy was lost in the process. The bad news is that the so-called "2008 Maps" are based on a generation of Navteq maps that has little to do with...... 2008...I've been able to establish that they are not the Q2/2007 maps used on the new iNav v3 AIO so they could either be Q3, Q4/2006 or Q1/2007. In any case it would have been a better idea for Garmin to keep the old numbering system and called them v9 to better manage user expectations who are always disappointed to find errors in maps.

If you want to discuss the changes in the 2008 maps you can use this thread of the nüvi forums.

Updated June 18th, 2007 - There are some good and bad news concerning the maps used on Garmin AIO units, starting with the good news, ahead of the usual fall schedule, City Navigator 2008 maps are available, as seen on some Nüvi 200 and Nüvi 660 units...

... No details so far on what Navteq map generation they are based on, at best they would be Q1/2007, so the 2008 name sounds a bit "anticipated". Understandably, people who are buying these units with v8 are returning them to get units with 2008.

Now for the bad news, Garmin have discontinued their unique policy of offering a free update to purchasers of AIOs that shipped with maps for which a new version had been announced prior to the purchase date. In fact, this amounted to one free map update and some people even chose to skip one. Ironically, TomTom who did not have such a policy have been offering free updated in the US for a year now.

Updated December 26th, 2006 - Garmin have just made available a new update to the...web updater, v2.41 and you can use this thread to discuss it. Since it was first released in November 2005, the WebUpdater has been the source of many debates as to how "dangerous" it is and actually some Garmin CSRs have warned users about it......after they called for a failed upgrade. In any case, here is a good summary of the current theories about it.

Updated April, 19th - After the Mio, this looks like this is going to be "update week" with new versions for many Garmin systems, if the WebUpdater doesn't find one for your system, try this link for beta versions. Among items of note, the Edge for cyclists now allows for lat/long input on the unit. Other update discussion threads : 2730, 7x00 and iX....

Posted 01/11/2005 - Whether it be your computer or your GPS, it's not easy to keep it up to date, especially when there are frequent updates as with Garmin's GPS receivers. In the same way that IBM/Lenovo offer their "Software Installer", Garmin have just launched their WebUpdater that automatically checks...Updated 02/09/2006 - The WebUpdater being reserved for "offcial" updates, you won't find the 5.01 beta update on offer for the C310/320/330 AIO's, with notably the addition of via points. You can join this thread to discuss.

...the latest version for your GPS, downloads it if necessary and installs it, that's how my Garmin i3 test unit made it to v2.70, only released by Garmin last night You can use this thread started by natedj to discuss.
