Post-CeBIT 2009 News - Garmin nuvi 1490t with 5" screen and CityXplorer Option

Updated April 16th, 2009
The CeBIT 2009 tradeshow closed its doors more than a month ago, but today's news, the launch by Garmin of the nuvi 1490t, looks like it belonged there since it joins the new family of 12xx and 13xx GPS systems shown at this year's edition.

The nuvi 1490t is Garmin's first "standard" nuvi with a large 5" screen (the 5.2" nuvi 5000 is large and heavy and doesn't have a battery). Other than that it also comes in an "ultra-thin" package with the optional cityXplorer content to navigate on foot in urban environments. You can use the nuvi 12xx/13xx/1490 with CityXplorer option topic of the nüvi forums to discuss.

Updated March 4th, 2009 - The 2009 edition of the CeBIT show is underway in Hannover, Germany and GPS manufacturers are using the attention to announce new products, well at least some of them...Nothing new for TomTom this year as they are apparently focusing on integrated systems with Toyota and Renault shown at the Geneva car show. We talked about the new Navigon units on Monday so that leaves us with Garmin who just announced the new 1200 and 1300 nuvi series...

...

These entry level units appear to be replacing the 2x0 and 2x0w models with a new thin form factor and 3.5" and 4.3" screens. Of more interest is the CityXplorer option that provides location and destination information for select tourist destinations in North America and Europe. This is promising as this the first AIO (All in One) to be specifically designed for use on foot in urban areas, a tall order due to the GPS inaccuracies in such environments. More details and thoughts in the nuvi 1200/1300 with CityXplorer option topic of the nüvi forums.Updated March 5th, 2008 - The 2008 edition of the CeBIT show is underway in Hannover, Germany and GPS manufacturers are using the attention to announce new products. We already discussed the TomTom GOx30 range on Monday, so let's move on to the new Garmin units, starting with the nüvi 2x5 range..., entry-level systems with a twist, as they are compatible with the MSN Direct receiver and have HotFix for faster GPS acquisition. Navigon who made a splash in the US in 2007 with the 2100 have announced the 2100 Max with widescreen and "Lane Assistant Pro" as well as a novel map subscription program called NavigonFresh that will keep your maps up to date for three years for $79.

Updated March 15th, 2007 - First day of the CeBIT 2007 show in Hannover today and as expected it was the first outing of several GPS systems whose existence had been leaked in the previous weeks. Starting with the new...... entry-level Garmin nüvi 2x0 series with a redesigned casing without a flip-out antenna and without SiRFstarIII, likely replaced by the MTK chipset. Moving on to the Magellan Maestro family with an HD screen and a unique Crossover (All-Terrain) option. Mio are launching their new ultra-flat C320(T) and C520(T) AIOs with an interesting "split screen" to leverage the 16/9 format. No consumer units from TomTom this year at CeBIT but the offcial launch of the GO 715, the first AIO with a built-in GSM Module. Stay tuned for more and be sure to check out the live report from our friends at PocketGPSworld.
After the 3GSM World Congress show that took place in Cannes last February, GPS also got a prime spot at CeBIT this year. It was my third trip to Hannover after those of 2003 and 2004 and GPS seems to be gaining in momentum. While the same actors are there for the most part, booths are more lavish and most are now grouped in one of the giant halls which strengthens the impact. As in Cannes, the actors of the GPS world are now striving to optimize both the software and the hardware to reach out to a larger public and no longer to the "early adopters", for the benefit of all users and fans of GPS !
