Sports GPS - Garmin relaunch the Foretrex Wearable GPS with 301 and 401

Updated June 18th, 2009
We had lost sight of the Garmin Foretrex family of GPS devices after the Foretrex 101/201 failed to get updated to a high sensitivity chipset in 2006 at the same time as the Forerunner series. Garmin have just announced that they are back with the Foretrex 301 and 401 that adds a compass and ANT connectivity.

As expected they now boast a high sensitivity GPS chipset with HotFix AGPS although it is unknown at this time which one it is : SiRFstarIII, MTK, ST Micro already used on Garmin systems or a new player. The format is similar to the previous models and they are quite wide, but that's a good thing to properly use their features (map and route/track/waypoint). They both use 2 AAA batteries so you can keep going forever with a good supply of spares! They will be available in Q3 for $200 and $250, in the meantime you can use the New Foretrex 301 and 401 Wearable GPS topic of the "Sports GPS Systems" forums to discuss.

Updated June 20th, 2008 - The groundbreaking Garmin Edge 605/705 GPS systems for cyclists with map support just got better with the addition in v2.20 of SiRFInstantFixII to speed up the GPS acquisition process. This is the first time AGPS is made available on an off-road GPS system...

... (although it might be present on the Forerunner 405 too) and it works well.

In unrelated news, Garmin have just become the main sponsor of the professional cycling team started by former US champ Jonathan Vaughters. They will be competing in the upcoming Tour de France with "souped up" Edge systems, read all about that interesting project on Cycling News and you can use this topic of the "Sports GPS Systems" forums to discuss.

Updated April 21st, 2008 - The Garmin Edge 605/705 sports GPS systems are now available and they take the category to a new level thanks to their microSD slot and mapping capability. In fact this addition turns them into capable hiking and road guidance systems as well, the most compact ones at that too...

...! My 705 test unit came in last week and I'm quite impressed, more comments and pictures in this topic of the "Sports GPS Systems" forums.

Updated March 31st, 2008 - Garmin's third generation of Forerunner GPS watches, the FR405 that comes after the FR201 in 2004 and the FR205 in 2006, was first shown at the CES show in Las Vegas in January and should start shipping in April. In the meantime you can take a look at this picture preview in the
forums following some quality time I spent with it at two tradeshows last week......

Even though the "mini-map" mode is gone, there is a lot to like about the FR405; for a start it's the first GPS "watch" that actually has the size of a (large) watch, it can keep on ticking for 15 days with the GPS module turned off, has a "touch" bezel for quick commands, has an optional bike mount and has wireless ANT connectivity.

Updated March 26th, 2006 - So Garmin did launch the FR305 at the CES show and they did manage to "cram in" the high sensitivity SiRFstarIII chipset, which no doubt came as a relief to Forerunner 201 users who had to deal with the frustration of frequent lost......"fixes". I have been testing a Forerunner 205 and an EDGE 305 so you can check out some first comments and pictures...... in their respective discussion threads.

Updated 11/24/2005 - It seems that history is repeating itself, with the Garmin Forerunner 305 being shown on the CES website. It probably wouldn't be too big of a stretch to assume it is powered by the SiRFstarIII chipset given it's numbering similar to Edge 205......This will be welcome news for owners of the 201 and 301 series who struggled to keep the "fix" while jogging in obstructed environments. Also note the redesigned display and the square format versus the "streched" format of the previous generations. Now if only it had Bluetooth on board ! You can take a closer look at it here.

Poster 12/13/2004 - Thanks to diverhank for sharing the news of the arrival of the Garmin Forerunner 301 due to be shown at CES 2005....... It takes after the 201, but it is rumored to have a USB interface along with an integrated Heart Rate Monitor - possibly built into that "odd" strap seen on the picture.

You can take a closer look at it here.[img]http://
