| Lowrance Endura GPS : Available in the US, User Feedback |
Posté le 27 août 2009 à 16:07:00 par gpspassion. EN - Handheld GPS Source : Gpspassion
Updated August 27th, 2009 Slightly behind schedule, the new Lowrance Endura handheld GPS systems are now available in the US, but still not in Europe. Many forum members were eager to try them out as on paper they appear to be the "ultimate handheld".
Unfortunately the first feedback is not very positive as these units appear to have "teething" problems such as the handling of the Accuterra maps and some features were misunderstood, the Sierra has Navteq road maps for instance but "turn by turn" routing is optional. Catch up with the Lowrance Endura Handhelds - User Reviews topic in the "Lowrance GPS Systems" forums for more details.
Updated June 15th, 2009 - I was invited to take part in the European press launch of the new Lowrance Endura handhelds on June 4th in Windermere, UK, in the Lake District. While there is still some work being done on the devices, both hardware and software (like having "Track Up" for Raster Maps), they were already quite functional, so much so that we used them on the sporting/geocaching event that had been organized for us. A great opportunity to get a handle on these new devices and discuss their finer points with the people who designed them...
... I'll reserve judgement until the shipping software is available, but I quite liked what I saw (satellite and navteq road maps, form factor, route creation, voice memo capability, etc...) and it's good to see some competition on this promising market. Head over to the Lowrance Endura Handhelds - Previewed topic in the "Lowrance GPS Systems" forums for pictures and comments.
Updated January 23rd, 2009 - After exiting the market for GPS road systems late last year, Lowrance are back with the new Endura family of handheld systems that includes three models at launch : the Outback, the Safari and the Sierra with respective MSRPs of $230, $385 and $549. They share the same form factor and a touchscreen, a feature that now seems a must on handhelds after... ... it was first introduced on the Magellan Triton and they adopted by Garmin for the Oregon. The Safari adds a compass and a barometer, and the Sierra comes with 4Gb of internal memory loaded with topo and Navteq road maps. Technical details haven't been announced but it's likely they are using an integrated platorm as Garmin is for the Oregon with the STM Cartesio. You can use the Lowrance Endura Handhelds - Outback Safari Sierra topic in the Lowrance section of the forums.
Updated September 30th, 2008 - Some forum members were wondering whether the previously announced Lowrance iWay 700 and 800 units with their giant screens would ever see the light of the day and the answer from Lowrance was more than they expected. Not only will these models not be released but Lowrance have in fact cancelled their iWay...
... line of Road sytems that will have included the 500c, 350c, 250c and 600c. The good news is that the crossover XOG system remains alive and well. More details in this topic of the Lowrance section of the forums.
Updated November 28th, 2007 The Lowrance XOG has started to ship and we already have some user reviews in the forums : rwamf, jelive, map comparisons. Happy campers so far it seems and GPS reception of the new Glonav DynaTrak chipsets appears to live up to its "high sensitivity" rating...
...
Updated October 8th, 2007 - In these times of convergence, here comes the Lowrance XOG, a "converged" GPS system that promises to work on the road, on the trail and on water. It seems to take after the iWay 250c with the additional off-road map compatibility and it is also splash-proof (IPX4).
On the GPS chipset front there might be some news as the specs only mention a 12 channel GPS chipset, but the Cabelas website states that they are using the "Super-sensitive Dyna Trak™ GPS chipset". Google didn't have much to say about this chipset...... but bcope01 found out it to be a Glonav product. Glonav is a spin-out from Ceva who had been providing their XpertGPS4000 software to MTK and NemeriX but this would be the first time the Glonav GNS4540 chipset rated at -159dBm is used in a consumer product it seems. More details and comments in this thread started by Jon_GWG.
Updated May 10th, 2007 - The Lowrance iWay 600c is now available, with its unique 640x480 5" screen and satellite images, and we already have some user reviews in this thread of the Lowrance iWay forums. Happy users so far even though the satellite images... ... do not add a lot to the navigation experience.
Updated February 16th, 2007 - If you've been waiting for the ground-breaking iWay 600c to become available, here's the next best thing : reading the full user manuals that are now available on Lowrance's site. They specify the coverage of the satellite maps and show the menus of the interface...... You can join this thread of the "Lowrance iWay" forums to download and discuss.
Updated November 1st, 2006 - Lowrance have just added the iWay 600c to their website and the least that can be said is that it breaks new ground in the AIO world with its VGA screen (640x480 resolution) and included satellite imagery and marine charts in the iWay 500c form factor (5" ultra-bright screen)...... You can use this thread of the "Lowrance iWay" forums to discuss.
Updated October 8th - There have been meetings of the GpsPasSion Team in the past (see GpsPasSion Live) on both sides of the Atlantic, but this is the first time that GpsPasSion Forum members get together for a road trip as members of the Lowrance forums did on Saturday in Massachusetts. Catch up with Bob's picture report and see the wealth of equipment adorning their bikes... ... !
Updated 09/29 - Unlike some GPS systems that take a while to become available after they are announced, the pocketable iWay 250c has already arrived and forum member fhantazm has picked one up. You can read his first impressions and pictures in this thread of the forums....
...
Updated 09/17/2006 - Lowrance is preparing the iWay 250C for release and in a departure from the previous 500c and 350c models, it is going to be a very pocketable AIO at just 1"/2.5cm, like the Garmin nüvi and TomTom ONE v2. Compared to the 350c it loses flash memory as well as the NemeriX 16 channel chipset in favour of an unnamed 12 channel chipset, likely SiRFstarIII since there appears to be no flip-out antenna....... You can use this thread of the Lowrance forums to discuss.
Updated 06/18/2006 - Lowrance have just posted the v1.7.0 update on their website for the iWay 500c. Members of the Lowrance forums have already put it through its paces and some routing improvements have been noted. More details in this thread of the forums.
Updated 06/03/2006 - Trying the 350c on a PC was nice, but you can't beat repeated use in the field to get a good sense of performance and overall comfort... ..; and this is what Paul did over the past few months with his 350c test unit. He shares his findings in this article in the AIO forums and other than some GPS sensitivity issues he quite liked what he saw, enjoy !
Updated 03/05/2006 - Those who haven't been able to use and enjoy the battery life (15+ hours thanks to the low power Nemerix NJ1030 chipset) of this AIO GPS can now try it from the comfort of their home with the PC emulator, more details on how to achieve this in this thread of the "Lowrance iWay" forums...
... Updated 12/22/2005 - The iWay 350c has arrived just on time for Christmas and site member testingcar is sharing his first impressions '(and pictures) with this new All-in-One (AIO) in this thread of the "Lowrance iWay" forums. Check it out !
Updated 10/24 - A busy day for "all-in-one's" since nearly a year after the iWay 500c was announced, Lowrance have a new "all-in-one" navigation system ready to GO, the iWay 350c. While it takes after its older sibling, the 350c has a smaller 3.5" screen, a smaller drive (4Gb instead of 20Gb) that still has full coverage of NA but it adds a rechargeable battery as well as an FM transmitter to transfer the sound on the car stereo. That should make for an interesting device, availability is scheduled for mid-November... ... and you can join this thread started by azsidewalker to discuss.
Updated 09/06 Lowrance made the 1.4.0 Update available last week and users are liking what they're seeing. Also check out this thread with tips to tweak v1.4. In other good news we now have a Lowrance iWay section in the forums. Thanks to ST-Bob for suggesting this and offering to moderate it. Enjoy Updated 08/27 Thanks to forum member schneid who spotted that the gl1800riders site had posted numerous pictures of what the v1.4 software looks like and there are many new menus to look at! You can use this thread of the forums to discuss.
Updated 02/25/05 With the iWay 500 released only a few months ago, Lowrance has more "all in one's" on the way for the summer season, these being the iWay 700 and iWay 800 that pull out all the stops in terms of screen real estate with a 7" screen for the 700 and a 10.4" screen for the 800. It's going to be hard to miss a turn......might also be difficult to find a good location for them on the dash! Music is back for the ride with a 20gb HD vs 10gb for the 500.
Updated 12/30
Lowrance have just released an update for the iWay 500 with a host of new features including 3D Map Display - available as a map update version or software only, read all about it in this discussion thread. http://www.gpspassion.com/pics/iway500s.jpg Posted 11/06 Among well known GPS Hardware brands, Lowrance still had not offered an "all-in-one"... road navigation system, but the iWay 500c "fixes" this, in style I might add, since it comes with a 20gb HD with 10Gb reserved for Music (MP3 and Ogg Vorbis), a first as far as I know!...
...Other specs of note are: - 5" touchscreen - Navteq USA map database loaded on the HD - External antenna included
