TomTom release v8.35 upgrade for GO x20, x30, x40 - Make your Mark !

Updated May 6th, 2009
Software updates for our GPS systems are generally uneventful affairs, but from time to time there are good surprises as with the v8.35 update just released by TomTom via TomTom HOME for their GO 720/920, 730/930 and 740/940 high-end systems.

Some will appreciate that the guidance instructions over FM are back or that you can now add roundabouts via Mapshare but the most notable addition is certainly the marker feature in the map mode. These floating and clickable markers make it much easier to find your bearings on the small screen of a GPS systems, their longtime weakness versus paper maps. You can use the TomTom v8.350 update for GO x20/x30/x40 of the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums to discuss.

Updated June 6th, 2008 - As in previous years, TomTom are offering a free upgrade to the latest software for their legacy GPS systems, i.e. Version 8 (aka Navcore 8) this year. This is good news, but the most spectacular new features of the full v8 available on the GO 730/930 units, IQ Routes and ALG (Advanced Lane Guidance) are missing. Clearly these features are map dependent, but at this point it doesn't seem that TomTom is planning to give access to these new maps to the legacy units...

...

Notable new features include additional controls in Mapshare (changing the speed and turn restrictions on the fly) and car icon customization. You will find a chart showing features and models in this topic of the www.GOtomtom.com section of the forums.

Updated September 4th, 2007 - TomTom are making good on their promise to upgrade their existing models to the v7 of the TomTom Navigator software, currently available on the new x20 range, see the 720 Topic. They had originally mentioned the fall, but the upgrade for the ONE XL is already available. Just connect it to your PC with TomTom Home and it will download it for you. From what I've seen all the new v7 features are there, except for...

... the vehicle icon customization. In Europe, Mapshare features work with the v6.75 maps, but not with the older v6.60 maps, so there is no need to wait for the v7 maps to become available. You can use the TomTom ONE XL Topic to discuss.

Updated October 10th, 2006 - The "TomTom goes Cross-Country" review of TomTom v6 North America for PDAs by cgavula, a member of GpsPasSion since 2002 (#125 !) is online. See in detail what he thought of the improvements at the interface and mapping levels and you can use this thread if you have questions or comments......

Updated 08/31/2006 - An illustrated "What's New and Improved" analysis has now been added to the TomTom Navigator v6 thread.

Updated 08/30/2006 - After a long wait for v5 users, TomTom v6, discovered on the GO 510/910's in the Spring then offered as an update for the GOv1/300/500/700/ONE/RIDER this summer, has now been launched as Navigator 6 for our PDAs, PocketPC's, Palm's and Nokia Smartphones...

...to be precise. Previously compatible with TomTom Mobile 5 available in Europe, Windows Smartphones are no longer supported. Users of v5 will be in known territory, as the many changes and improvements have been well integrated as can be seen in details in this thread of the PDA Software forums.

Updated 06/2005 - TomTom release Navigator v5 for PocketPC, robbiex shares his experience using this new version in the US.

Posted 10/14/2004 - Thanks to Paul who caught the announcement by TomTom of Navigator 2004...... that marks the arrival of "NewTomTom" on the PocketPC Platform, after first being launched on the PalmOS platform earlier this year and then being used on the GO and Smartphones in Europe.

While less feature rich than Navigator v2 up to now, "NewTomTom" offers a more consistent user interface with TomTom's trademark "fluidity" in 2D and 3D modes. Navigator 2004 has only been announced officially in the USA for now where it will attempt to put TomTom on the "map" after the relative failure of TomTom v2 in spite of the winter 2003 map upgrade.

You can head over to this thread in the forums to discuss.
