| GPS Systems with PocketMap 2009 software : PND-428A Reviewed |

The PMN R4 software announced earlier this year is now called PMN 2000 Edition and in case you no longer own a compatible Windows Mobile PDA/Smartphone, Space Machine have introduced a full line-up of AIOs powered by the 2009 edition.
Paul reviewed one of these, the PND-428A with its 4.3" screen, SiRFAtlasIII platform, Trip computer and Enhanced Map Modes. He quite liked what he saw, particularly the split screen to get a sense of an upcoming turn. Updated January 16th, 2009 - Out of the blue a new version of PocketMap is now available, almost 5 years after the release of PocketMap 2004/R3. Needless to say no one was expecting a new version anymore! So it seems Space Machine decided to return to the PDA/Smarphone platform after giving the WinCE/AIO platform a try, and a major win on paper for the Alpine Blackbird, but it failed in the market...Looking at PocketMap R4, we're back in familar territory with a rich GUI and map display and some new oversized turn indicators. For maps they have switched from TeleAtlas to Navteq, still considered to be the BOB in the US...

Possibly as a consequence of that, the software is now locked to the microSD card it is sold on, which is sure to upset potential customers who don't want to part with their memory and likely larger memory card. A review copy should soon be on its way to us so stay tuned for more, in the meantime you can use the PocketMap R4 Released - Navteq Maps topic of the "PDA Navigation Software" forums to discuss.
Updated January 16th, 2006 - Little had been heard from Space Machine, the makers of PocketMap Navigator, one of the early PocketPC Navigation Programs, since the 3.04 version was released in mid-2004. Still no news on the PocketPC front, but there is certainly a lot of activity on the WinCE4.2 platform adopted by many AIO's (All in One systems) since late 2004. Walking around CES last week we first noticed...
 ... the Pontus systems running an unknown software that turned out to be a revamped and landscaped version of PocketMap Navigator based on the credit page and then figured out that the new Alpine Blackird was also likely relying on PocketMap based on its looks. Even more surprising, Space Machine have their own AIO ready to ship, it's called the GPS-306 and you can read some first feedback about it here in the forums.
Updated 07/19/2004 - Thanks to cgavula who spotted that Space Machine had released an update for PMN - v3.04. This new version allows for font selection and increases the number or favorites to 500, a lot to go by! As a reminder, PMN 2004 is available from Semsons and buyGPSnow and Semsons also has a wealth of bundles...

Site regular igurevich38, author of the World Map Database has just completed his extensive review of PocketMap Navigator 2004 by Space Machine......The third installement of PMN is an impressive achievement, combining usability with many bells and whistles at an excellent price!
igurevich38 leaves few stones unturned as he goes through the look and feel, the quality of map data (TeleAtlas), the sharing of data betwewn PMN users, etc...Link to the article
