Connected GPS - Garmin nuvi 1690 with nuLink : Issues
Post on 06 November 2009 at 18:49:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS Source : Gpspassion
Updated November 6th, 2009 The first "connected GPS" that seemed to be well armed to break through thanks to its virtually unlimited "data plan" (2 years bundled with the unit) is having some issues. More reports are coming from users with sreen problems (models manufactured before October 16th) or of freezes, reboots, prompting returns...More details in the Nuvi 1690 GPS with nüLink - User Reviews topic of the nuvi forums.
Updated October 14th, 2009 - While a "connected GPS" (built-in GPRS module with SIM card) looks good on paper with its permanent access to live data, their history (available below) is littered with failures (Dash, BestBuy Insignia), cancelled models (Magellan 5340) or half-hearted efforts (TomTom GO 740). Is this about to change with the Garmin nuvi 1690 that has been available for a few days ? First reports from the road by...

Crossover GPS - Garmin Aera 5x0 : Aviation/Auto GPS with touchscreen
Post on 03 November 2009 at 15:49:00 by gpspassion. EN - Crossover Source : Gpspassion
Posted November 3rd, 2009 With the market for car-only GPS systems in turmoil du to fierce competition, price wars and announcements (see below), Garmin are continuing to push "crossover" models, the sports sytems, the "nuvi for the Sea" and now the aera 5x0 family of GPS systems, the 500, 510, 550 and 560 with various options and priced between $875 and $2199.
The new "aera" models replace the venerable GPSMAP96, 96C or 196 systems and add a touchscreen, always a challenge when you need to maintain readability in bright environments. They come preloaded with CityNavigator road maps to "go from runways to roadways". You can use the Garmin Aera 5x0 : Aviation/Auto GPS w/ touchscreen started by "deltatango" in the "Garmin Advanced Navigation Systems" forums.
Posted October 13th, 2008 - Crossover devices always look good on paper but don't always do well in the field or with users, as appears to be the case with the road/off-road nüvi 5x0 launched by Garmin last fall. Here come another breed of crossovers, the land/sea GPSMAP 620 and 640 that have been dubbed the "nüvi for the sea". They have a lot going for themselves with their ultra bright and...

MSN Direct to fold in 2012 - Get a Refund for Garmin GPS Subscription
Post on 30 October 2009 at 14:22:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 30th, 2009 The recent launch of the nuLink Service for the nuvi 1690 and nuvifone cast a shadow on the future of the MSN Direct service transmitted over FM. We'll never know if Garmin moved away from MSN Direct because they knew of its upcoming demise or whether MSN Direct called it a day because Garmin moved on, but the bottom line is that the MSN Direct service available on the nuvi x8x models will fold in 2012.
Originally the service was guaranteed until the end of 2011 so there is a slight "bonus". MSN Direct are also doing the right thing by offering a refund to recent subscribers while allowing them access until it folds. More details in the No more MSN Direct after 2012 topic of the Garmin nuvi forums.
Updated January 14th, 2008 - Wile it was the buzz of the 2008 CES show, "connected GPS" navigation is nothing new, it first started with the low bandwidth RDS FM for simple trafic information, then GPRS for Traffic and last spring Garmin introduced MSN Direct on the nüvi 680 and SP 580 models. Traffic was improved with traffic flow data in some areas and it added Gas prices, weather reports and movie listings. Now Garmin are launching MSN Direct v2 with enhanced features such as stock prices, news, local events and a send to GPS feature. Unfortunately...

GPS per Google : Google Maps Navigation launched for Android and USA
Post on 28 October 2009 at 18:30:00 by gpspassion. EN - Software Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 28th, 2009 Oops, Google have done it again...the announcement of Google Maps Navigation while not entirely unexpected, sent the stocks of the GPS players tumbling down 20% today. Is this an overraction?
While the market is always right and Google have clearly spoilt us with great apps over the years, we should keep in mind that this is an "off-board" application with all the data stored on a remove server, not locally like on an AIO, so 3G (or even 3G+/HSDPA) will be required for the data rich content. Also only the Android platform is getting it for now and it's limited to the USA. You can use the Google Launches Threat to GPS & Maps Powers of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.
Updated February 25th, 2009 - Google regularly enhance their free geo-related applications and Google Maps Mobile has recently received the new Latitude feature that allows users to share their live position with friends. The position can be determined by various means, GSM, WiFi or GPS of course. It will even work in the background when you exit GMM, so make sure you turn it off for privacy...

GPS for Trucks - Garmin nuvi 465T : Truck + Car Guidance : User Reviews
Post on 26 October 2009 at 16:50:00 by gpspassion. EN - GPS for Trucks Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 26th, 2009 The Garmin nuvi 465T, the first dual Truck+Car GPS System has been out for some time now and we are beginning to get some interesting user feedback in the forums.
Some are impressed by the convenience of the 465 when driving with their RV, but other comments indicate that the intricate truck settings may not be well reflected on the road. I saw a nuvi 465 at the Navteq Navivision event and noted it used the nuvi 255w hardware and had the "trip" icon on the main menu, a first for a nuvi. You can use the NGarmin Nuvi 465 - Truck + Car Guidance topic in the "Garmin nüvi forums" to discuss.
Posted March 18th, 2009 - Virtually no stone has been left unturned when it comes to "GPS Assisted Navigation" for cars, but systems for trucks have been far an in between, in fact other than ALK's PC-Miller based CoPilot Truck is the only "consumer" system. This is where Garmin come in with their nuvi 465t announced at the Mid America Truck Show. While it keeps the familiar form factor of Garmin's widescreen mobile systems, the 465T adds road restrictions such as height, width, length, weight and hazardous materials to compute specific truck routes...

Garmin GPS - New CityNavigator NT 2010.20 Maps Available - Europe too !
Post on 21 October 2009 at 15:04:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 21st, 2009 Good things come to those who wait...so at this point European nuMaps Lifetime subscribers or recent buyers entitled to the nuMaps Guarantee will likely just be happy to download the City Navigator NT 2010.20 maps, albeit three months after the North American users.
Garmin clarified from the beginning that under nuMaps Lifetime, there would be "up to 4" quarterly updates per year...and naturally many assumed it would be 4. We'll soon find out if that holds true in the US, but it appears that the next update will become available in 2010. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.20 Maps - Released 07/09 + 10/09 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums.
Updated July 30th, 2009 - As expected, Garmin have released the third quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.20". These new maps are likely based on the Navteq Q1/2009 release...

New Magellan Roadmate 4700 GPS - User Reviews and Wishlist
Post on 19 October 2009 at 16:25:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated April 27th, 2009 While Magellan road systems have disappeared in Europe following the sale of Magellan by Shah Capital to Mitac (parent company of Mio), new models are still being released in the USA, likely to capitalize on the strong Magellan brand name and who originally "owned" the road GPS market with their Roadmate 500 and 700 in...2004. The latest model is the Maestro 4700 that appears to be based on the "New Gen" Magellan software, unlike the Maestro 4350/4370 based on the iGo 8 software...
The Magellan 4700 has already met with quite some success among forum members and they are sharing their thoughts in the Magellan Maestro 4700 - User Reviews topic with current problems being bugs when routing to Florida, a weak voice-command feature and ads displayed with traffic information. Forum member jerryoster has also started a * Masetro 4700 Wish List * topic in the "Magellan Roadmate and Maestro AIOs" forums.
Updated April 27th, 2009 - This just in, longtime forum member corgi1 received his Magellan 1470 last Friday and has been putting it through its paces since then, so far so good. He also pitted it against his Garmin nuvi 680 and he is kindly sharing his list of "pros and cons" and pictures in the Magellan 1340, 1440, 1470 - User Reviews topic of the Magellan forums. The question of the GPS engine being used is...

TomTom Car Kit for iPhone with SiRF : Testing - New iPhone Forums !
Post on 16 October 2009 at 15:20:00 by gpspassion. EN - Smartphone GPS Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 16th, 2009 Thanks to the FCC there wasn't much left to the imagination when the TomTom Car Kit became available on the Apple Store for pre-order at the end of September...except that for a few hours they did sell it with the Tom Tom Application but my order was amended. It came in today as expected and I've been putting it through its paces.
Let me first say that I hadn't seen such a comprehensive car holder since the end of 2005 and the Seidio G4850 for the Dell Axim x50/x51 but it didn't have Bluetooth. The TomTom Car Kit certainly packs a lot of punch with its Easyport, SiRFstarIII module and patch antenna, loudspeaker, Bluetooth handsfree, audio out, miniUSB in and a volume "jog shuttle". Catch up with the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone - Testing topic in the new "GPS on the Apple iPhone - smartphoneGPS.com" forums that can be reached via the www.SmartphoneGPS.com shortcut.
Updated September 2nd, 2009 - As we're waiting for the GPS announcements of the IFA show in Berlin starting on Friday, the FCC recently gave us the scoop on TomTom's much anticipated car mount for the iPhone, dubbed the "kitchen sink" since it comes with everything but the kitchen sink...

New Navigon GPS systems in Europe with LIVE and RealCity 3D - 8410
Post on 12 October 2009 at 15:32:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions Source : Gpspassion
Updated October 12th, 2009 While US Navigon users are still wondering if they will receive more updates under the FreshMaps subscription they purchased (CS says "No", CEO says "short backlog"), Europe is getting a full range of new systems, the 14xx, 24xx, 63xx and 84xx.
The 24xx gets an electronic compass for better performance in pedestrian mode (a first on a road system), the 63xx and 84xx the LIVE option and the 8410/8450 get a 5" capacitive screen (like the iPhone) and RealCity3D, an impressive 3D modeling of 16 European cities. Comments and pictures in the Navigon 8410 GPS with LIVE and RealCity3D topic of the "All in One" Navigation Systems forums.
Updated May 22nd, 2009 - While Navigon's exit from the North American market is now confirmed, they are still supporting existing customers with the release today of the Navigon Fresh Q2/2009 map update via the Navigon Fresh software. As in the past there is a delay compared with Navteq's own dates, normally two quarters, but these maps could be...
