Garmin GPS - New CityNavigator NT 2010.30 Maps Available in America
Post on 20 November 2009 at 01:04:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 20th, 2009
Garmin have just released the fourth quarterly map update under the nuMaps Lifetime program and it's called "CityNavigator NT 2010.30". These new maps are only available for North America for the time being and could either be based on the Navteq Q2/2009 or the Q3/2009 release.

The CN NT2010.30 maps are also available under the nuMaps Guarantee program (within 60 days of buying your GPS) and the oddly named nuMaps Onetime. You can use the Garmin CN NT 2010.30 Maps - Released 11/09 topic started by SergZak in the nüvi forums.

Updated October 21st, 2009 - Good things come to those who wait...so at this point European nuMaps Lifetime subscribers or recent buyers entitled to the nuMaps Guarantee will likely just be happy to download the City Navigator NT 2010.20 maps, albeit three months after the North American users...

TomTom for iPhone - New v1.2 version adds New Maps, ALG, TTS, Touch
Post on 18 November 2009 at 17:20:00 by gpspassion. EN - Smartphone GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 18th, 2009
Well GPS on the iPhone is clearly in the news these days, so let's go with it! TomTom have just made a new update for TomTom for iPhone available for free via iTunes. The v1.2 version adds several new features : TTS (Text to Speech to pronounce actual street names) , ALG (static 3D view of roadsigns for complex intersections), iPod Touch compatibility (useful when the iPod kit becomes available...) and new maps, the v835 (TeleAtlas 2009.06) like on the AIOs.

Unfortunately there is still no traffic information option, or any other TomTom LIVE service, which is odd considering how "connected" the iPhone is, or an option to add your own POIs. More screenshots and comments in the TomTom for iPhone - Testing - v1.2 topic of the www.smartphoneGPS.com forums to discuss.

Updated October 16th, 2009 - Thanks to the FCC there wasn't much left to the imagination when the TomTom Car Kit became available on the Apple Store for pre-order at the end of September...except that for a few hours they did sell it with the Tom Tom Application but my order was amended. It came in today as expected and I've been putting it through its paces. Let me first say that I hadn't seen such a comprehensive car holder since the end of...

Magellan for iPhone : Roadmate "OneTouch" and Car Kit with GPS
Post on 16 November 2009 at 17:02:00 by gpspassion. EN - "All in One" Solutions
Source : Gpspassion

Posted November 16th, 2009
Well it seems we're not quite done with iPhone news after all and it is now Magellan's turn to announce the availability of an iPhone GPS application : Magellan Roadmate 2010, for North America only at this time. They have also pre-announced a Car Kit with GPS like TomTom's but that adds compatibility with the iPod Touch.

Things are certainly picking up for Magellan since they were bought by MiTac last year with successful new PNDs (the Maestro 4700 or the Roadmate 1470) and now an iPhone application and a Car kit with GPS. Back to the glorious Palm days when they had a similar combo ! Unfortunately, like the GPS apps launched earlier, the iPhone app fails to leverage the iPhone's connectivity and there is a disclaimer not to use the 2D mode on the 3G...You can use the Magellan Roadmate for iPhone + Car Kit topic of the www.smartphoneGPS.com forums to discuss.

Updated November 2nd, 2007 - After a long wait map upgrades are now available for most of the Magellan Roadmate line-up, i.e. the 800, 860, 3000, 3050T and 6000T, or should we say "almost" since the Software Upgrade Version 2 pages have been temporarily taken off-line, apparently because of Vista misbehaving...

NDrive GPS for iPhone : US version and London version with oblique maps
Post on 13 November 2009 at 02:33:00 by gpspassion. EN - Smartphone GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Rounding up an "iPhone News Week", here is NDrive, another "turn by turn" navigation system for the Apple iPhone but with a "twist"...

The newly launched NDrive USA version is similar to the other apps out there in the sense that is uses Navteq road maps (in Europe NDrive use TeleAtlas maps). More unexpected is the London version with its "oblique" views (provided by Norwegian company Blom), first seen on the Microsoft Live website a few years ago. Unlike satellite pictures they can be used for road guidance on the fly. They are planning to roll out more towns in the future.

In the meantime you can use the NDrive for iPhone: First looks to read kyteflyer's opinion of the software after some testing in Autralia. We're also planning some testing of the USA and European versions so stay tuned for more.

iPhone GPS - Navigon for iPhone : First app with traffic feed
Post on 11 November 2009 at 17:50:00 by gpspassion. EN - Smartphone GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 11th, 2009
Ever since the first on-board "turn by turn" navigation software became available for the iPhone, we've been perplexed over their lack of "connected" features - the iPhone being "THE" connected device - and mostly traffic data.

Well this is now fixed since Navigon, who were also the first out of the gate with a GPS app in June, are now offering traffic data as an option. It's reasonable priced at $25 for life and even $20 for the next four weeks. It's also impressive on paper with the usual TMC "incidents" being complemented by FCD (Floating Car Data). Unfortunately the first test runs in Europe are disappointing with toll gate slowdowns being converted into traffic jams...You can use the Navigon for iPhone - Testing - v1.3 of the iPhone forums to discuss.

Updated October 7th, 2009 - "MotionX-GPS Drive is the only GPS navigation solution designed and optimized exclusively for your iPhone. With MotionX you instantly find what you're looking for, then you get a list of door-to-door directions and a highlighted route. The maps are live, all you need to do is to follow the blue line!" - They've got a point, this is the first "native" turn-by-turn application for the iphone compared to the other current solutions which were developped on other platforms. Doesn't make it necessarily better, but interesting nonetheless and the GUI does seem to have been optimized for the iPhone. MotionX are well know among...

Apple iPhone 3GS with GPS : Compass aware applications
Post on 09 November 2009 at 13:52:00 by gpspassion. EN - Smartphone GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 9th, 2009
When the iPhone 3GS was announced last June, many of us dismissed the "S for Speed" claim as a clever marketing ploy and decided to pass on upgrading our 3G. The addition of a compass was of more interest on paper but having experienced them on various GPS handhelds over the years I wasn't impressed...

...until I saw a screenshot this summer of the "direction cone" in the Google Maps application and confirmed the dismal performance of the GPS chip in the 3G, so I had to test the 3GS. Well I'm "stumped", by the massive overall performance increase, and also by the usability of the compass, Apple and Google did it again ! More details in the List of Compass aware applications of the SmartphoneGPS.com forums.

Posted June 8th, 2009 - The keynote at the Apple Developper 2009 Conference (WWDC 2009) has just ended and there are several items of GPS interest : iPhone 3GS : S for Speed, the fastest iPhone in the 3G format, it includes a compass, iPhone OS 3.0 : enhanced GPS support and last but not least, TomTom for iPhone : compatible with 3G and 3GS, full turn by turn navigation with an optional active car holder. Let's stay tuned for more, in the meantime you can use the iPhone 3GS with Compass and TomTom topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss...

Connected GPS - Garmin nuvi 1690 with nuLink : Issues
Post on 06 November 2009 at 18:49:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated November 6th, 2009
The first "connected GPS" that seemed to be well armed to break through thanks to its virtually unlimited "data plan" (2 years bundled with the unit) is having some issues. More reports are coming from users with sreen problems (models manufactured before October 16th) or of freezes, reboots, prompting returns...More details in the Nuvi 1690 GPS with nüLink - User Reviews topic of the nuvi forums.

Updated October 14th, 2009 - While a "connected GPS" (built-in GPRS module with SIM card) looks good on paper with its permanent access to live data, their history (available below) is littered with failures (Dash, BestBuy Insignia), cancelled models (Magellan 5340) or half-hearted efforts (TomTom GO 740). Is this about to change with the Garmin nuvi 1690 that has been available for a few days ? First reports from the road by...

Crossover GPS - Garmin Aera 5x0 : Aviation/Auto GPS
Post on 03 November 2009 at 15:49:00 by gpspassion. EN - Crossover
Source : Gpspassion

Posted November 3rd, 2009
With the market for car-only GPS systems in turmoil du to fierce competition, price wars and announcements (see below), Garmin are continuing to push "crossover" models, the sports sytems, the "nuvi for the Sea" and now the aera 5x0 family of GPS systems, the 500, 510, 550 and 560 with various options and priced between $875 and $2199.

The new "aera" models replace the venerable GPSMAP96, 96C or 196 systems and add a touchscreen, always a challenge when you need to maintain readability in bright environments. They come preloaded with CityNavigator road maps to "go from runways to roadways". You can use the Garmin Aera 5x0 : Aviation/Auto GPS w/ touchscreen started by "deltatango" in the "Garmin Advanced Navigation Systems" forums.

Posted October 13th, 2008 - Crossover devices always look good on paper but don't always do well in the field or with users, as appears to be the case with the road/off-road nüvi 5x0 launched by Garmin last fall. Here come another breed of crossovers, the land/sea GPSMAP 620 and 640 that have been dubbed the "nüvi for the sea". They have a lot going for themselves with their ultra bright and...

DIY GPS - Skinning your Garmin : Halloween and Make your Own !

Updated October 31st, 2009 - We've seen that WinCE based AIOs (All in One's) are generally quite "customizable" and "skinnable" and while Garmin systems are not as "open" you can also taylor them to your liking too. You can download extra vehicle icons, including the latest Halloween models, provided by Garmin as discussed in this thread and if you have some time on your hands you can make your own using these instructions and tools kindly provided by ezran. Enjoy !

MSN Direct to fold in 2012 - Get a Refund for Garmin GPS Subscription
Post on 30 October 2009 at 14:22:00 by gpspassion. EN - Connected GPS
Source : Gpspassion

Updated October 30th, 2009
The recent launch of the nuLink Service for the nuvi 1690 and nuvifone cast a shadow on the future of the MSN Direct service transmitted over FM. We'll never know if Garmin moved away from MSN Direct because they knew of its upcoming demise or whether MSN Direct called it a day because Garmin moved on, but the bottom line is that the MSN Direct service available on the nuvi x8x models will fold in 2012.

Originally the service was guaranteed until the end of 2011 so there is a slight "bonus". MSN Direct are also doing the right thing by offering a refund to recent subscribers while allowing them access until it folds. More details in the No more MSN Direct after 2012 topic of the Garmin nuvi forums.

Updated January 14th, 2008 - Wile it was the buzz of the 2008 CES show, "connected GPS" navigation is nothing new, it first started with the low bandwidth RDS FM for simple trafic information, then GPRS for Traffic and last spring Garmin introduced MSN Direct on the nüvi 680 and SP 580 models. Traffic was improved with traffic flow data in some areas and it added Gas prices, weather reports and movie listings. Now Garmin are launching MSN Direct v2 with enhanced features such as stock prices, news, local events and a send to GPS feature. Unfortunately...
