Updated March 12th, 2010 Destinator was one of the first GPS Assisted navigation programs for mobile devices in 2001 and its v2 was the first to offer 3D navigation in late 2002. Fast-forwarding to early 2010 v9 arrived on Windows Mobile and Android and now the iPhone version is available.
Destinator offers "on-board" navigation, which means it can work autonomously with maps stored on the device and routes calculated directly. It can access the network for "connected" features though, such as real-time traffic, google local search or Live Weather.
Destinator have kindly offered to give 5 full licences to GpsPasSion forum members. To get your free licence, just post a message in the Destinator 9 for iPhone : Free Giveaway topic in the "GPS on the Apple iPhone - smartphoneGPS.com" forums.
Updated January 19th, 2010 - The Destinator GPS software was relaunched in June last year (see below) and it is now available as Destinator v9 for Windows Mobile and Android Smartphones, with an iPhone version in the works apparently...
Updated March 10th, 2010 After iGo in 2006, iGO 8 in 2008 and iGO amigo/My way in 2009, here comes iGO primo that Nav n Go just announced at the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany. It is OEM software, which means it will come pre-installed on GPS systems.
iGo primo relies on the simple iGO amigo/My way interface but benefits from new advanced features such as driver alerts, terrain view, etc...It will have to be judged in the field as there is nothing very spectacular on paper. You can use the Nav n Go launch iGo primo - Easy, Advanced topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums to discuss.
Updated August 31st, 2009 - Nav'N'Go came to the "GPS spotlight" in early 2006 with the release of iGO 2006 that we quickly dubbed here the "Liquid Navigator" as it offered a fluid map display that was unseen at the time and that remains largely unchallenged today. Then came iGO 8 with terrain view and 3D buildings...and then came the split with Mio in early 2008 following the purchase of Navman by Mitac...
Updated March 8th, 2010 As a follow up to last week's news about the new Mio Moov V780, uBlox published a press release today to announce that this new GPS system relies on their AMY-5M GPS chipset for location.
This appears to be first time uBlox are getting a major win on the PND market after Navigon cancelled the initial Porsche Design system with Linux and uBlox 4. Mio don't really explain in the PR why they chose the AMY-5M, so it could be for cost reasons...or because there was uncertainty as to SiRF's products during the litigation with Broadcom/Globallocate in 2009. More details in the Mio Moov V780 - GPS and more with uBlox 5 topic of the "GPS and Mobile News" forums.
Updated September 9th, 2008 - uBlox have just announced that their anticipated u-Blox 5 GPS chipset was being used to power Microsoft's MapPoint 2009 USB Stick. They explain that thanks to the power of the new chipset, Microsoft were able to build a diminutive receiver that feels like a standard USB stick. This seems to mark the end of the Microsoft/Pharos association whose...
Updated March 2nd, 2010 The CeBIT show is underway in Hanover, Germany and some GPS companies are launching new systems. Mio is making a splash with the Moov V780 a real "all in one" with GPS, Entertainment (720p movies, TV, YouTube) and Connectivity (WiFi or 3G or WiMax for Email).
While this sounds impressive on paper, let's keep in mind that similar devices have failed on the market, such as the Clarion Mind, and that the GPS engine of the V780 is "Spirit" a revamped version of the Navman software bought by Mitac in 2007 and that failed to impress on the Spirit range launched in 2009. You can use the Mio Moov V780 - GPS and more started by Jim1348 in the "GPS and Mobile News" forums.
Updated September 28th, 2007 - More picture geotagging news with the announcement this week of the Mio C720, a C520 that packs a 2MP digital camera for picture geocoding on the fly. While this is convenient as seen on the Navman AIOs with NavPix, the...
Updated February 25th, 2010 After the failure in the market of the original nuvifone (launched as the G60) and of the M20, the Garmin-Asus partnership are forging on with new models, the A50 and the M10. The M10 is based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and the A50 is based on Android 1.6 but with some heavy customization by Garmin, such as "multi-touch".
Both the A50 and the M10 were shown at the MWC 2010 show in Barcelona last week and while the M10 is not out of the ordinary, the A50 made a big first impression. A sleek form factor, a stellar screen and the vast possibilities of the Android platform should help put it on the...map. More comments and pictures in the Garmin nuvifone : G60 - M20 - M10 - A50 topic of the forums.
Updated October 5th, 2009 - Nearly two years after it was first announced the Garmin nuvifone G60 is finally available for purchase in the US with AT&T and will likely be announced in Europe on Thursday. The G60 looked like a "killer device" in January 2008 but with the iPhone having gained a GPS module and GPS apps in the meantime and the breakthrough of the Appstore, it looks like an uphill battle now. While things don't look as good on paper, according to PC Magazine they don't look...
