Did some testing tonight and v5 of XT is faster calculating than V4, the most was a 10 second difference. I was surprised but feel the test was fair. I noticed in V5 I have to scroll down to choose my favorites (don't like that!) and the custom icons do not appear next to the favorite. -mix |

| @mixmaven - Thanks for your help. Yes, I was planning on letting SPB know about the Mobile Shell Today plugin issue. I was also able to add the other plugins I wanted, and got my main screen setup the way I wanted without having the Mobile Shell plugin active. And GMXT still works! :) This will work for me until SPB can resolve the today plugin issue. Thanks again - now I can start playing with this new GMXT which looks quite nice so far. |

WOW! This is a big difference for the interface. Personally, there are some features they added that I absolutely LOVE, making the total experience a MUCH MUCH better one. The big one being the ability to google an item from the GPS interface and then navigate directly to that location. SO MUCH easier than having to go outside of garmin to google a place and then typing the address into XT. No longer do POI's matter! 10 points for Garmin for that one!!! Another thing i really like is the way that they now list the potential places. Getting more info right on that search results screen, whether it is in the POI's or after googling, seeing more contact info about the place really helps quickly know which one i wanted without having to key into each one to see the address.
Another nice display change I really like is at the top of the main navigation screen. It just seems so much more intuitive how they show you which way you are turning and the distance on the left and list just the next street in the middle. When you are driving, i felt that i had to read thru a long sentence just to find the street or exit i want. They really cleaned it up.
What i think it still really needs:
A "Home" button attached to (pretty much) every screen. I get like 5 pages deep and then have to keep going back, back, back, back, to get to my map when i need to look at the directions again. There should be some way to toggle between what u are searching for and the map so u can quick take a glance at where you need to turn next and then not lose where u were in your search. This bothers me ALL the time.
As for the car icon....I don't really see what is so great about it? if anything i think it clutters the map more and makes it harder to see what i am directly driving on....maybe i just need to get used to it some more. only been driving one day with the upgrade. But all in all this is BIG improvement, now they just need to add TTS and we're all set! |

| You can turn the car icon off if you don't like it, just revert back to the arrow. |

Haven't tried but a long press might take you back to the main menu as it does on the nüvis.
One feature it still lacks compared to the nüvis is the ability to make custom speedcam voice alerts. I tried both the MP3 and the new SOX/Wav method and all I get is still the ol'beep ;-) |

| I've had a chance to play with this new version for a bit, and I like it. Route calculations seem to be just slightly slower on my device, but not enough to be an issue for me. Interesting that Garmin included a Panoramic (spelling?) location feature, but I'm not sure how useful that will be. Overall I like the improvements with the exception of the extra memory usage, but I guess that's to be expected. |

| Make that Panoramio, (www.panoramio.com) they were bought by Google last year so it was probably part of the "Google Search" deal, the new nüvis have that too via Garmin Connect. I was disappointing to see fewer pictures in the XT version, they must be doing some heavy filtering (ladmarks only ?) because many pictures are missing. |

Hello, this is my first post here. I have been using MXT now for a few months. One of the the features I like the most is the upcomming street display at the top of the screen while driving and just viewing the map, not routing but just having the map display your progress. I just updated to 5.00.10 and I could not get it to do this the first time I tried it. When I turned it on after having left my dentist's office it started doing it (displaying the "_____ street ahead" at the top of the screen, I was so happy. When I went to work this morning it stopped doing it again. I have been told by more than one rep at Garmin that this feature has been removed and I have to go back to 4.20.50 to get it back. This doesn't make any sense to me since it is not something I can see anyone getting approval to remove at Garmin. Now I do have one of their reps looking into it farther for me but it just seems weird that it would work one time and not another. Has anyone noticed whether or not it displays the next street ahead at the top of their screen when not routing? It is where it says "Driving on _____ street", then when you are approaching a street it switches to "_____ street ahead".
Thanks, Wayne. |

One more weird thing happened to me. I installed the older version of MXT 4.20.50 and then reinstalled 5.00.10 just to see if it made a difference with the issues I was having as stated in the above post. When I went to use it there is no Google Local Search, not it "where to" or in "Garmin online". I uninstalled andreinstalled several times, by removing the SD card and deleting the software from the phone the replacing it and installing the software again and by installing the older version the updating to the newer version. Still no Google local search. What is happening to me? Garmin must have me on a watch list by now.

Looks like it ;-) The way I would reinstall is copy the v5 files to the microSD card and then insert in your PDA. You should get asked if you want to install Garmin Mobile XT. If that doesn't do it, you'll probably have to do a hard reset of your PDA, unless Garmin's support have a better idea.
As to your original question I haven't driven without a route programmed, I'll check the next time. I wonder if I didn't see a complaint about that in the nüvi 2x5 topic too, XT uses a very similar interface. |

@muniac
There isn't a problem, just (re)install v5 to your card, force garmin to connect to verify your online account status, you should see the google search options. -mix |

| Thanks for your replies guys. I will try connecting (I am currently only using wifi) and see if I can check my account status and ressurect Google local search. As far as the other problem, I found a way to force the "view map" page to display the upcomming road. I start a route then do a detour and choose upcomming turn and select the first turn, the unit then recalculates. For some reason when you force a recalculation it brings back that feature (display upcomming turn). Weird, I know and certainly not the way I want to live with this program, but at least I can tell the CSR's at Garmin that their product does in fact have that feature. |

| Just wondering if anyone out there is using the new GMXT with a Dell Axim X51v, and if so, what their experience is. I am getting more serious about switching over from iGuidance to something else as every day passes, and I would rather make a good choice rather than jumping at the first shiny stone I see... |

@gpspassion: You're correct - pressing and holding the Back button will take you all the way back.
@brucemc777: I had an Axim X51v before getting the HTC Advantage, and had prior versions of GMXT installed on it. GMXT worked very well, and I'd recommend it. However, I have not had iGuidance so I can't compare GMXT to that. |
