Can anyone please tell me that if the DVD - Mobile XT with City Navigator NT North America comes bundle with the GPS 10x is actually the same as City Navigator® North America NT v8 which is used by all stand-alone NT compatible Garmin devices ?
Does the Mobile XT DVD has all the necessary software to be used as City Navigator® North America NT v8 for all NT compatible devices ?
Meanwhile I am looking to re-sell it on ebay rather than leave it at my desk collect dust, it is totally useless for me since I am residing in Malaysia. |

Hi All,
Garmin has just posted a new version of their Mobile XT app for use on Windows Mobile devices. The original release on the DVD is version 4.00.20w(p) and this new one is version 4.00.60w(p).
You can download it from here:
http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00579-00
or
http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00580-00
Note that this is for use with Garmin Mobile 10 (GPS10x) or Garmin Mobile 20 (GPS20SM). I just installed in on my X51v using both my GPS10x and my GPS20SM and it works a treat.
Check out the HUGE list of changes made since the original 20w(p) version. Also check out this particular change log item:
quote: Provide support for downloading GPS satellite data from Garmin Online (the Garmin Online setting must be 'Always' for this feature to work.)
Apparently Gamin has now implemented the AGPS feature (i.e. downloadable ephemeris data) in their Garmin Online services. WOW! |

Sweet, thanks for the post! Maybe they added the option of using it with the internal gps on my P3300! Wait, this is reality, I must have been dreaming.... I have a better chance of having a winning lottery ticket in my pocket than having that happen.

FYI:
I had to uninstall, then manually delete all the garmin folders (except for the maps) then reinstall, soft reset in order to get it to work. Now I can't connect to weather and traffic, it says I don't have proper authorization... even though I registered with my.garmin.com
Any one else having the same problem? -mix |

It installed fine on my smartphone. I didn't have to delete anything. I really like some of the new improvements (backlighting is a big one)
It stated in the install instructions that PPC users needed to uninstalled everything before loading the new version. Maybe yours didn't uninstall correctly? |

Must not. I did have to go back and restore the voice directory on the card... I will go back and restore the nvm files and the gpx directory that I removed from /.
edit: after I restored the files, I was able to log in. Strange. Must have just been something with my initial install.
It does seem to run better, time for a drive test!

| Actually, Garmin's web site says that you need to uninstall the previous version of "Garmin Que" (which is NOT the same app as Mobile XT). Thus, there's no need to uninstal your prior version of Mobile XT before installing the latest version. I installed right over the top of the older version 4.00.20wp and didn't have any problems whatsoever. However, if you are running an older beta version, then it might indeed be a good idea to uninstall and delete everything before installing the latest version. |

.60 does work better so far, seems to run faster at times. I noticed there was a file in the firmware directory on the card when I installed .20, and the .60 notes mention the abilty to flash the firmware... anyone been able to do that yet on the 10x?
On my previous issue, and in the rare instance that GARMIN reads this thread (since they haven't responded to the support email): I read on the garmin site that you could just install over the top of 4.00.20, however when I tried .60 would not start; it would think and then error beep and die. I soft reset and tried again with the same result. I then uninstalled (from remove programs) soft reset than reinstalled and had the same error. I would get the wait cursor for a few seconds and then the process would die (no error beep this time.) I figured there must be some sort of conflict with the older nvm files so I wiped the directory on the device and memory card and cleaned the registry out and reinstalled again - it worked perfect until I found that I could not log into the web services (auth error.) So I restored the nvm files and GPX directory and everything came back. This was on a HTC TyTN, ROM 1.35.255.2, Radio 1.27, EXT ROM 1.35.255.102
thanks, -mix |

I believe that Garmin added "the ability" to flash the GPS10x's firmware, but did not add an actual update at this time (either that, or the firmware update was only for very early units that had an older version of the firmware than the official release versions have).
As for using GPSProxy with Mobile XT... I doubt very seriously that will ever happen (and I personaly hope that it doesn't). However, I guess one never knows as hackers always seem to have some really good tricks up their sleeves.
There is a guy over on the BargainPDA.com forums who is claiming that he has personally seen a non-Garmin BT GPS receiver running Mobile XT, but he's not provided any validation or proof at this point. If I had to guess, I'd say that he's just misunderstanding what he actually saw is all. |

Thanks for the info! I will check it out. Obviously garmin could make it so the user has to be validated via the garmin server. If I could put the my.garmin.com user and pass in, it could verify my serial/unlock and allow XT to be configured to use an internal com port (yes, the NEMA->Garmin issue as well.) More and more phones will come with a GPS embedded, it is just a matter of time before external gps units are a thing of the past, which means garmin will have to change the way they do business. I have always thought that tying your software product to a specific hardware ID is short sighted, all of us who have had to return garmin units have had the hassle of generating a new unlock codes, which in my case has not been without problems.
It would be nice if they made an "automatically check for software updates" checkbox in XT.

Is this automatic or where are you seeing this option? I set garmin online to always, but the option did not appear under tools?

| I believe it is indeed automatic. Unfortunately, I can't confirm this feature one way or the other as I'm currently running Mobile XT on a Dell Axim X51v that doesn't have a built in phone. |

I had been waiting for this package to come out for a while and held off buying anything cause i really wanted this one. It's my first GPS package and i think it's so much better than how i was getting around before, but i have to say, i am not as impressed with this package as i thought i would be.
For starters, I think TTS would make such a big difference and i think it ought to be required on any GPS in the future as a safety feature bc now i have to look at the screen and read the name of the street i am turning onto. Which is even harder on a PPC cacuse the screen is so small.
Most of the other issues i'm experiencing all seem to be related to a lack of control over the settings. For example: I am in sales, and I want to upload a list of all the doctors i will call on. (That in itself is not easy to do and i may wind up typing each one in by hand.) But once they are in XT I wish i had more control over seeing them on the map or in the software itself. Specifically, I wish there was a way to turn on/off which POI's you want to see on the map. Also, the lack of sorting options for "My Locations" makes it hard to view those contacts i want to see without any other locations getting in the way. Another thing i noticed and maybe this i can change and didn't see how, is when i view my locations it is only showing me the coordinates and not the actual address. That is very annoying! Plus, things like telling me if/when i have been to a location and how many times would be nice perks for me.
I suppose i will learn to adapt to the software, and i'm not saying there is anything else out there that would work better for me. But for now i am going through some growing pains.
EDIT: Does anyone know if the new beta version of Mapsource will transfer the "category" you put your waypoints into. I am entering my docs in the older mapsource version and i am told that the category will not transfer over onto your phone.... |
