While searching for a new house in the counties of Jefferson and Berkely in West Virginia, I've been able to compare maps. I'm using CoPilot 6, Tom Tom 5.1 and iGuidance 2.1.3. Here is a sample of the results from looking up addresses of homes for sale. Pretty interesting. The realtor sites I'm using have a "Map It" feature that will show the house for sale on a Map Point map. The links are to that map and will show in certain cases that the street is not listed there either.
The following streets in Falling Waters, WV 25419
Nestle Quarry Rd - Found in Tom Tom and iGuidance, but not in CoPilot.
Keepsake Dr - doesn't show on CoPilot or iGuidance. But in Tom Tom it appears with a dirt road icon next to the street, but does have the street available. Not in Map Point http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=BE5360189
Jeanna Ln - Not found in any program http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=BE5425483
Flowerwood Dr - not found in any program and appears to be in the same area as the above street.
Harpers Ferry, WV 25425
Red Bird Lane - found in CoPilot and iGuidance, but not in Tom Tom. Not found in Map Point either.
Sylvan Lane - in CoPilot & iGuidance, but not in Tom Tom. Doesn't appear on Map Point. http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=JF5363953
Marcum Ln - not in Tom Tom or iGuidance, but CoPilot does locate it as being in Riverside, WV. Map Point does not have it. http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=JF5409246
Moonridge Lane - Found in iGuidance, but not in Tom Tom. CoPilot finds it as being in Forrester Center, WV. Not in Map Point http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=JF5304101
Eagle S Nest - CoPilot can only find the interesection of Eagles Nest & Shannondale Rd. Found in iGuidance. Not found in Tom Tom. Not in Map Point. http://homes.longandfoster.com/Map_Point/Map.aspx?coId=2&mlsNum=JF5304101
Travelers Ct - complete address found in iGuidance and Tom Tom. CoPilot can locate Travelers Ct & Halltown Rd intersection, but not the address.
A few of these streets appear in iGuidance as being in unincorporated towns. So is probably the reason for the varied results.
CoPilot - able to locate 4/10 complete addresss and in two other occasions at least found an intersection of the road. So it found the road 6/10 times, but the complete address only 4/10.
iGuidance - found 6/10 addresses.
Tom Tom - Found only 3/10 addresses.
So in this small sample of 10 addresses that I *needed* to get to, iGuidance was the most reliable. CoPilot was 2nd and Tom Tom was last.
Just further evidence to what we all know...you can't solely rely on just one app. My wife has the PPC with OCN 5 installed on it, so I wasn't able to those results. If anyone wants to do that, I'd be curious to see how many streets it found.

Thanks for sharing that with us. It is interesting also because the three products you have compared use three completely different map data sources: iGuidance uses maps by NavTeq, TomTom uses maps by TeleAtlas, and CoPilot uses their own maps for North America.
Since you had such difficult time locating addresses or even streets, my guess is that the areas are all relatively new, two to three year old developments. Am I correct?

That was my first thought, that these were all new houses in new developments. But upon checking the age of the houses, one of them was built in 1978 and most others are several years old. I don't think any of those were brand new construction.

Not really permitted by the TomTom licence, your best bet would be downloading the US maps from the TomTom website pretty good price if memory serves.

I am noticing the discussions about iNav v.2.1.3. I just bought this GPS software and a GPS receiver for my PPC 6700 running WM 5.0. I successfully loaded the application, however, when attempting to launch the application I get this message. " invalid or missing data file: poi.bin. Has anyone got any suggestions as how to resolve this problem? There is no support at iNav until July 2nd as the whole company is off at some meeting. Thanks in advance for any idea's GVS

You need to download the WM5 patch from www.inavcorp.com - the software must be registered - then just go to "support" and then "downloads". If you just bought it you'll also be eligible for the upgrade to 3.0 for just shipping charges. - sheureka

Thanks, I did download the patch and it works. Thanks. I have loaded my map files and now want to add a city, however, it appears that you can not append the current map file but must reload the entire map file. Is there something I am missing here?

TomTom6 Maps might have been improved in the USA but apparently not much improvement with Canada Map. Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario has been been many years. Both POI and street address are still missing. Seneca College is in the same similar situation. I will not recommend any TomTom products for the Canadians.

Cool, Sam, thanks much for saying that. I've been curious to find out if the improvements included (Ontario) Canada, and if yes, than to what extent. Errors in my area in earlier versions resulted often in very odd routing. If you experienced the same, is this still the case?

Here's a spot check for maps. Lat. 43.593446 Lon. -116.374513
That's where S. Locust Grove Road crosses US Interstate 84 in Meridian, Idaho. There's been an overpass there since 2007. ALK Co-Pilot in my RW200 doesn't have it. DeLorme Street Atlas 2009 and Mapquest shows the overpass but has I84 running *over* it. I added it to openstreetmap.org
There's been a huge amount of road construction in the Boise, ID metro area the past several years yet some changes that're 2+ years old still haven't made it into some of the 'brand new' electronic maps.
The USA needs a national roadmap database that can be updated directly by local government road agencies. All the construction gets well surveyed before, during and after construction, and for the past several years the plans have been created on computers. WTH is so difficult about getting that data into maps? |
