Firmware update for 2720 many changes....
http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1005
Software 2.60 is a complete package that will update the American English TTS voice (Jill) to version 1.4 and GTM-10 Software to 2.20. After this software is installed, American English, Jill (TTS) will be selected as the current voice language. To select a different language, press the MENU key, then select Settings... General... Language.
Reverting to previous software revisions will clear all user data. WARNING: If this software is uploaded to a device other than that for which it is designed, you will not be able to operate that device. If attempts to upload software fail, you may need to return the device to Garmin® for service. Change History Changes made from version 2.50 to 2.60:
Problems Corrected: Spanish text was displayed wrong on the Map Setup page. Address number is now repeated in the on-screen turn instructions. Some European streets could not be found. Nearest-point searches didn't always search MPC generated maps. Some addresses could not be found. Formatting was not consistent among all menus in all languages. Very long routes could cause the system to restart. Changes made from version 2.30 to 2.50:
Problems corrected: Improved consistency of menu presentation. Corrected a number of issues related to NT maps. Improved GTM-10 traffic receiver support. Improved MapSource route transfer speed. Improved product behavior in no-satellite conditions. Improved map turn arrow appearance. Improved address search wizard to prompt for city only when needed. Features Added: Added support for European 2720. Added support for traditional (non-TTS) voices. Holding the DELETE key on the keyboard now erases the entire entry. Added full screen option to map data field choices. Added map browser button to save your current location as a Favorite. Remote Control Page up/down buttons now cycle through Map, Trip Computer, and Turn List pages. Added map configuration page for enabling and disabling drawing of individual maps. Added Mileage Log Tool. Added speech rate adjustment. Changes made from version 2.20 to 2.30:
Problems corrected: Receiving maps in MapSource could result in a communication timeout. Lat, Lon position entry using the product's keyboard didn't work correctly. Waypoint names weren't displayed on the map. Track logs were not drawn correctly in 3D map mode. Features Added: Added mileage log. Type and sub-type information is now displayed when reviewing a map feature.

| I have it already installed and hope this does not start the problems others have reported. I have had no problems with getting connected and the 2720 even connects inside my house where the 2610 never would. |

It took a long time for the GPS to return, but it did finally. The most noticeable change is that "Jill" now says "please". "Please turn right on highway 219". I hope it does not do that on every command as that will be nothing but obnoxious. The voice speed can be sped up or slowed down, but the pronunciation is not any better. I will try many versions of the voice option tomorrow when we take her for a drive and I will let you know.

Installed the update. Seems great. For those who wanted that tabs gone that is an option now. If they would only allow the Map key to be like the 26xx page key. Now you have a choice of the remote or Normal tabs to get one button access to the Turn by Turn.
I almost forgot I tested MapSource with the 2720 and indeed Routes can be Backed up and Restored, so it looks like if Garmin does supply a version of NA7 maps for 2720 desktop routing is an option:) |

It would really be great if they would now also give 2620 people a CD and allow them to also use Map Source to plan on PC's

I played with the voice today and the new "normal" seems to be slower than the original standard one. I tried Slower and Slowest and I returned to Normal which seems to be quite acceptable. I can't figure out how they came up with a voice program that cannot pronounce the word "road", it come out as "roud", but otherwise things are pretty good. There was an option on the 26x0 for a "return to start" vs. a return home which would have to be reset every time I moved. Does anyone know if the return to start still exists but possibly in some other form?

I've been looking for the return to start option (or equivalent), and as far as I can tell, it's not there in any form.
You can just add this to the list of things they took away. Now your only choice is to create a new waypoint, or change "home" every time. In general, I don't see a problem with creating a temporary waypoint. They even made it easier in the update by adding (or restoring) the capability to easily mark the current location and save it as a waypoint. But, again, it was better before.
I like the new update, but wish they had done more to restore previous 26x0 functionality. Also, some people are reporting bugs, although I haven't noticed any of them myself.
But I just noticed another thing that's missing today. They got rid of the letter elimination functionality when you're entering an address. You guys can correct me if I'm wrong (because I sold my 2610 already), but I thought that, as you entered a city or street name, it would gray out the letters that no longer applied based on the current spelling, and names in the database. (There's a technical term for this type of auto-completion, but I can't recall what it is right now -- computer science school was a long time ago for me!) Anyway, my wife's Honda does this, the RoadMate does this, and I'm pretty sure my 2610 did it.
The 2720 doesn't have it. Eeek. It does have some kind of alternative functionality that is similar. As soon as you enter a letter that makes the match impossible, it pops up with a "not found". And as soon as you enter something that has just a few possible options, it pops up with a list.
But I think the industry standard method was easier to use.

Some people disliked the limited letter choice (I can not remember the term either).
I am quite happy with the 2720. Did you notice in the release notes that TTS voices are supported now. Apparently there not available yet, but the feature was added. I suspect it would be used for all redundant words like left/right/Turn etc. and the TTS would be saved for unique words. |

Anyway as I mentioned earlier, while Jill (nice to know her name:) is poor speaker I got used to her, and she sure beats having to look down at the pop ups. Having multiple opportunites to here about an upcoming turn including the name is very helpful. |

I noticed the non-TTS comments. I was hoping there would be some kind of improvement already. I was also wondering if they would just provide a non-TTS option.
They did improve some of speech, but a lot of common words are still funky sounding. Also the words "on" and "onto" usually don't have an appropriate pause before them. (E.g. "turn leftontoroute 22"). I hate that.
But I'm getting use to it too.

I see how to select either all or nothing, but nothing like 3 rather than 4 or being transparent. Have I not looked hard enough? |

I think the three vs four is still there. It's just a matter of which data configuration you choose.
Transparency, and my personal favorite, the "floating" next turn arrow, are still unaddressed.

| The qty. is effected by Data Choices as you select different options they will increase and decrease the number of Tabs. I was using two with Thin for a while. I subsquently swithced to Normal (no tab choices for one touch access to the turn by turn). |

| I probably have not been paying close enough attention before, but today on a short run on the Turnpike, when it was time to exit Jill would instruct me to take "East Memorial" not exit # so and so or the May St. exit. Since Memorial is simply a side street to the freeway were I in unfamiliar territory this would not help and might confuse me. Was it this was before and I just did not notice? |
