A friend has a 1490LMT. He tried to upgrade the firmware (currently has V5.40) and maps (currently 2012.30). The upgrade failed. (I'm not sure of the exact circumstance.)

Now, his GPS cannot be detected by any Garmin programs (MapUpdater, MyDashBoard, or Webupdater) although his Vista computer shows all the folders and files. A click on PROPERTIES shows 100% full (no free space). When connected via the USB cable to his computer, the computer icon is visible on the Garmin screen.

The 1490 is NOT a "brick", though. It still functions normally. He does not use an SD card.

A Master Reset failed to resolve the connectivity issue.

I suggested calling Garmin Support, but in the meantime, is there any thing we can do?

The best approach is to backup everything, then delete unnecessary files, then reinstall the map update. Forum member lilla has written several tutorials for the 1490T covering these processes. See this post for more information: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=142303

He said the Firmware update failed. This is risky business but you can open the Nuvi and delete some Voice files,Text files of every Nationality on earth. Dont' need them. Delete any pics on there. You can even delete the map in system folder. Its the large file. Don't delete the Basemap. It's large but not as large as the Map. The Basemap file starts with B so you'll know. Then try the firmware and then do the Map update again using Map Updater and not Life Time updater. I had trouble with the LMU bigtime in my 1490T..regular Map Updater did the trick.

I'd be very wary of deleting the 'map' in the system folder, by which I assume you mean gmapprom.img.

Carbuff, if your friend follows alanb's advice then he should find it works OK, but as Catcaper advises, use Option 2 to update the maps, NOT lifetime map updater which still continues to cause all sorts of problems.

I agree, be very wary of deleting map files. The .system folder (note it's DOT system and not just system) is hidden for a reason, one of which is so you don't delete the map files in error. There is no reason to delete a map file anyway as the update process will look after that for you.

If you don't want to follow alandb and sussamb's advice then remember that the map file names are:

gmapprom.img - the main map file with all the road and POI data.

gmapbmap.img - basemap

You could also have:

gmaptz.img - time zones

and possibly gmap3d.img, and gmapdem.img but I don't think 1490 supports these two, not sure.

Rick you're correct, 14xx series doesn't have the latter 2 files.

Thanks Guys, I was reluctant to delete anything 'cause I didn't know the filenames or the type (map or voice)

BTW I DID tell him to use the old MapUpdater (option 2 on the Dashboard) and avoid the Lifetime Map Updater, but again, I don't know what actually happened.

Rick, thanks for providing the mapfile names, just so that there will not be any errors.

Good you guys put the fear of God in would be file deleters. But this works for me on my 1490T. Don't know about any other Nuvi's.
Maybe I've been doing this for a while..pretty easy now for me. Copy the whole Nuvi file to you PC first for backup.
What I do for a smooth nice running 1490T is delete all text, voice files non English. These voice, text files are easy to figure out. E**** is English. I leave all English files both in Text and Voice. THat's good enough. Delete pictures. Delete the JCV file inside the JCV folder. Install a Micro Card. Download the Large JCV file and transfer it to the JCV folder in the Nuvi. Delete the gmapprom.img - the main map file with all the road and POI data. It's the largest file. Only that single file is deleted.
Then use Map Updater Option 2 in My Maps under My Garmin and download and install to computer only. The open Map Source (Maybe Base Camp will do it? I don't use Base Camp)and select the map button and select the whole US Canada Mexico area. Transfer to Micro card. That's it. You'll get total coverage and full JCV file. Plus you'll have room to install a POI file onto the Nuvi so you don't get the message every startup asking you to transfer from Micro card.
I hope this makes it easy for 1490T owners. It took alot of reading here to get this figured out. I had to cut out all the other stuff for other Nuvis and get down to what the 1490T will do.
You'll have to have "show hidden folders" option checked in Windows to see the files to delete. Map,JCV files are in Sys folder. Text,Voice,Vechiles, etc. are obvious to find there.
As you know I love the 1490T. My lively hood depends on it. Saves me lot's of money. Between MS and Routeing that it does but if you run it like Garmin offers it doesn't reach it's full potental.

Here's an update (finally):

After calling Garmin they determined that one file was corrupt. We deleted that, then the unit was recognized by WebUpdater and the Mapupdater. The unit is now updated, using firmware V6.10 and maps V2013.10.

Hook up the Garmin 1490 to a computer, navigate to Garmin>LEX_PKG>lex_pkg.ver

Delete the .Ver file and that's it. (Ours showed 0 bytes, now it's 43 bytes....must have been corrupt from my friend disconnecting the computer BEFORE it was ready.)
