Sounds interesting, I'll make sure to check it out at their booth on Thursday, or earlier if they have a preview during the press day tomorrow ;-) We have a topic on StreetPilot for the iPhone here : [NEWS] Garmin StreetPilot or the iPhone (CES 2011)

Will be having a live demo on the road today, in the meantime the 24xx page is up on the Garmin site : https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=87052 and the interface, at least the main menu seems to have changed, with ecoRoute directly accessible top right :

The route list seems different too with a summary at the top :

Got a closer look at the 24xx during a quick drive around The Venetian :

On the left, next to the dezl 560 with which it shares the same hardware :

Next to the nuvi 3790 :

Not quite as stylish or as thin

It will be the 5" version of the nuvi 22xx and 23xx.

I scrolled the map around and while not as fast as on the 3790 it did not exhibit any of the annoying "inertia" of the 1xxx, 1490 or 169x models. The Garmin team wasn't sure if that was due to improved hardware or software. Let's hope that if it's a software fix it will make it to the 1xxx models.

Good question, will go back and check.

I just found out the 24xx (and the dezl) have three new features :
1. Main menu customization (up to 16 icons)
2. Advanced Detours
3. Custom avoidances

...and according to the people on the booth existing devices are NOT getting them via an update. I made a nuisance of myself on the booth telling them that this would make existing owners upset, again, and that no one could understand why Garmin did things like that...they didn't really have an answer other than they wanted to sell new products !

EDIT : went back to check and can confirm it is a powered cradle, stay tuned for pictures tomorrow.

One of the "new" features is that it automatically saves your location when disconnected from the cradle (sounds like an old feature), so that's part of the powered cradle. Can you also check on the street-name detail? The lack of this was always very frustrating on the 1490. Not offering this new software on older 1490s (if they can) is a lack of good customer support. Fixing the "rubber-banding" user interface as well bringing back street-name detail is more of a bug-fix than adding new features. As long as the 1490 remains a current product, Garmin should support it with these fixes. It makes me think that that the 1xxxs will all be discontinued shortly.

Automatically saves the last position (for car parking) is also a feature in 3790series.

I hope it has the "more data" option for the map screen like the 1490T has.

Yes the 24xx has that option too. Actually when I asked one of the guys on the booth about the new custom menu option he thought I was talking about that...I'll sort through my pictures and post those showing the new features and the cradle tomorrow, it's been a long day ;-)

This is good if it is true. I will like the custom main menu Icons alot too. Do we have limited choices for Icons? If so what are they?
Also will Ram have a cradle for this unit? I have a Ram setup now with a 1490 in my truck that I love and would want to continue with that.
They seem to have decent priceing as well.

I can understand Garmin not wanting to add too many new features to old models in the interest of selling new models but I would have thought where the units (such as the 37X0 series) are still current / less than 6 months since launch there is a good case for them to update these features.

Garmin has long needed to include more advanced detour functionality so good to see that is now a "standard" feature.

I wouldn't want to upgrade to one of these new units as the form / size / functionality of the 37X0 series is near perfect for me.

Do new models support multiple routes? I mean real routes, not "trip planing" like in 37xx.

I wonder if Garmin is going to give back this functionality to nuvi series.

Garmin has said that a firmware release this quarter will provide the multi point routing feature on the 3790.

They actually promised it during the first quarter, so that gives them a little under 3 months.

All the new models seem to have the same 3700 user interface, including the trip planner.
