Hi everyone,
Have a few questions about the c330. I have the 2009 map updates on my SD card and can read them fine with the unit. But, what i want to do is erase the old v8 maps loaded on the units memory so i dont have to see the old maps message all the time when i start my unit, and see multiple map systems in the map info menu, i only want the 2009 version which is the latest. Is there anyway to get into the c330's filesystem to erase the old stuff, or use a program to get rid of the old maps and mabye even free up the units memory?

Disclaimer: These procedures are not sanctioned by Garmin, and I take no responsibility for any problems that may arise. In other words, perform them at your own risk.
With the C330 connected to the computer via the USB cable, backup the contents of the C330 (all folders and files) to your computer's hard drive before making any changes. This will be your only lifeline if things get really messed up.
The primary map is contained in the C330's "Garmin" folder in two files named gmapprom.img and gmapprom.sum. If you rename these files gmappromold.img and gmappromold.sum), the C330 will not recognize them as mapsets.
Now unplug and restart the C330 to confirm that the 2009 maps on the card are still working and that the old maps no longer show up. If all is working well, you can delete the two renamed files. If things are not working, simply restore the files to their original names.
If you choose to delete the renamed files, you may be able to transfer the 2009 map files from the data card to the C330's internal memory, thus freeing up the card for other purposes. Of course, this assumes you did not buy a locked, pre-programmed CityNav 2009 card. Note that because the 2009 map files are larger than the v8 map files, you may need to free up some internal memory first. The best way to do this is by deleting some of the unused language files in the C330's "Voice" folder and unused vehicles in the "vehicles" folder (see link below). This worked fine on a C550, but I'm not sure the C330 has enough internal memory, even with the unused voices and vehicles deleted.

The 2009 maps on the card may have the file names gmapprom.img and gmapprom.sum OR gmapsupp.img and gmapsupp.sum. If you freed up enough memory, simply transfer both files to the C330's "Garmin" folder and rename them gmapprom.img and gmapprom.sum if necessary.

| My problem is that when i plug the c330 into my usb port, when i go into my computer i do not see the garmin. I have all the drivers installed correctly bcause the webupdater does work. So i need to know how to get into the c330s internal memory so i can erase the old maps. |

I had a similiar problem. If I plugged the C550 into my Windows XP computer while Windows was running, the Garmin would not show up as a removable drive in the "My Computer" window. However, if I booted the computer with the C550 attached via the USB cable, it would show up as two drives (one for internal memory and one for the card reader) in the "My Computer" window.
Re-installing the USB drivers didn't help and, since both Mapsource and Webupdater recognized the devise, I knew the USB drivers were not the root cause.
The complete fix, which allows hot swapping of the C550 while Windows is running, is to permanently assign unused drive letters to the internal memory and to the card reader (I used Y and Z). This eliminates the conflict from more than one USB devise trying to use the same drive letter. I don't remember the directions for re-assigning the drive letters, but I found them in the Windows XP help files.

Hi there thank you for your help.
Unfortunately it seems that even if i reboot the computer with the GPS connected it will not show them as removable drive in my computer so i still cannot assign them a drive letter. I dont know how to get into the c330s internal memory without being able to access them as drives. |

update on this,
I have tried with windows xp, vista, and on linux. I cannot access the files system on any of them. (although i dont have any drivers for linux either). On xp and vista it will not show up in my computer no matter what i do.
Anyone have a suggestion? |

C330 / C340 do not have drive interface. You cannot browse the filesystem on the devices.

After you insert your SD card with 2009 map into the SD slot, now your GPS has two maps, the old and the new(2009) one. You can leave both of them active, or you can use only the 2009 map by doing the following:
a. Touch ‘wrench symbol’ on the bottom right of the screen.
b. Touch ‘map’ on the upper left-hand corner of the next screen.
c. Touch ‘Map Info’ on the bottom-center of the next screen.
d. Uncheck the old map ‘City Navigator North America NT v8 or what ever it happens to be.
e. Now the GPS will use the 2009 map only.

Hello, my problem is I can't read the NT2009 file I loaded on the SD card when it's in the c330.
at mapinfo screen it has a check box next to a list for
City Navigator north america NT v8
then no check box next to a line listing

the c330 does not appear to be reading/sensing the SD card?
I followed these instructions to load the NT 2009 to my hard drive then copied to the SD card......

Answer:
To install the mapping update to the computer only we will need to do a alternate install. To install to the computer only:
Windows
Insert the DVD
Click on My Computer / Computer
Right click on the DVD drive
Click Explore
Click on the MSI folder
Click on the file CNNANT2009UPDATEWEB_ENU.MSI (for english)
The install will begin copying to the computer only
Mac
Insert the DVD
Click on Finder from the dock
Click on Garmin 2009
Click on Mac Folder
Click City Navigator North America NT 2009.gmap
The install will begin copying to the Mac only.

It seem you only copied the map to the computer but not to the SD card! I think what you need to do is connect your Garmin to the computer through the usb port and click the icon for 'mapinstall' or 'mapsource' and follow the instruction thereon.
Alternatively, you may start with the disk, connect your Garmin to computer and click 'install map to GPS'. I think that should work too. |

Well, it has come to pass that this is now actually fairly easy to accomplish. Some kind folks over in one of the Dutch forums related to all-stuff-Garmin have come up with the answer and passed it on. Others have picked it up, moved it into the English-speaking world, and made it available for your consideration.

In the thread above, the participants talk about the identical situation that is discussed here, though in reference to the StreetPilot 2720, another Garmin unit which, like the StreetPilot C330, does not accomodate "mass-storage" mode in Windows.
I happen to have an SP2720 AND an SP C330, and I've successfully used this procedure to completely erase the old "City Navigator North America NT v8" maps in both units, and replace those outdated maps with brand new "City Navigator North America NT 2009" maps. (The new mapset is significantly larger than the v8 mapset, and the C330 will not accomodate the complete 2009 mapset in it's internal 1GB memory space; some of it will need to go onto a small SD card and into the SD card slot. The SP2720, with it's 2GB internal memory space, will have no trouble whatsoever.)
You'll need MapSource installed on your PC, and you will, of course, need valid 25-character Garmin unlock codes for each device/mapset combo. Just because you have "City Navigator North America NT 2009" installed in MapSource for your Nuvi doesn't mean you can use it for your C330 without another unlock code for the C330. Unlock codes are available for purchase online from Garmin, and this process does nothing to short-circuit that; it only allows you to actually get your legally-created maps onto the unit hassle-free (or relatively so...). :)
If you haven't clicked the link above already, you're almost ready to do so. It's not a long thread, so read it fully and well; it's quite informative. If you're looking to upgrade the maps on a StreetPilot 2720, you might as well click now; the following discussion pertains only to C330 owners. Enjoy!
C330 Owners: Since the newer mapsets, in their entirety, exceed the internal memory limitations of the device, and will therefore not fit unless some map tiles are left out during the map-creation process, you'll need to resolve the issue in another way, such as the following:
- Use MapSource to create a new U.S.-ONLY 'gmapsupp.img' file on an SD card connected to your PC. Once you've selected all the map tiles you want in MapSource, click 'Send to Device' and choose your SD card as the destination for your map file. MapSource will automatically create a 'Garmin' directory on the SD card and place the new 'gmapsupp.img' file into it. IMPORTANT - DO NOT CHOOSE THE C330 AS YOUR FILE DESTINATION!
- Once this process has completed, copy it to a safe place on your hard drive (C:\Garmin\), then re-name it to gmapprom.img. You'll upload it to your C330 later, as outlined in the linked thread above.
- Go back to MapSource and create another 'gmapsupp.img' file onto the same SD card, over-writing the first one, but this time, select map tiles for CANADA-ONLY. This time, however, DO NOT re-name the 'gmapsupp.img' file; leave it alone!
- Click the link above and learn how to copy the 'gmapprom.img' file that you copied to your hard drive into the internal memory of the C330, over-writing the old mapset in the process. Then...
- Plug the SD card into the C330 and enjoy your full set of 2009 maps! This can be done, of course, with CN Europe NT 2009 -- or any other Garmin mapset -- as well; you'll simply have to decide where you want to make the cut between map tiles that live internal to the unit and those that live on the SD card. Enjoy! |

Just for fun I thought I might try this my C550. I have been a bit worried about manually replacing the gmapprom.img file since the official update makes changes to an XML file and appears to do a few other housekeeping chores. Well it does not work. It copies the gmapprom.img over to the device as GUPDATE.GCD and there is insufficient space to do even that. It looks like this method will only be useful for those devices that do not support mass storage.
I guess I will stick with an updated SD card and leave the built-in maps alone. |

As you know, the C550 appears as a drive in Windows, making the process mentioned above unnecessary. In this case, it's much easier to simply replace the 'gmapprom.img' file manually, after having backed it up, of course.
I would suggest that you back up the device to your local PC, folders and all, then go ahead and replace the 'gmapprom.img' file manually (drag 'n drop). I've done it with my C550 several times without incident; no ill effects noticed whatsoever. If you should notice something you don't like, simply restore from your backup and problem gone. Again, though, I've never seen such a problem, and I doubt you will either. |
