I have a garmin 2610. About 4 years old. Unfortunately it has been a POS since new. I always thought it was operator error but it is just a lemon. Many times you will be on a major route and suddenly you are not on the highway. Will show you 1/2 mile off the road. Constantly telling you it is reaclculating. I paid for the 08 maps but now I give up. The connection cord is loose and needs to be replaced. I would sooner repalce this unit. I still think that Garmin makes the best and I just got a bad one. We use this in an RV so a bigger screen would be nice. I dont need MP3 or XM but most of the better units seem to have these features. So far the only decent units I can find on the net are the 7200 or one of the Nuvis. Any suggestions? I did read the older comments on the 7200.

Sounds like you have not had any / all of the detail maps needed downloaded to the 2610 unit and it has been having to rely on its base map.

Gomez. I thought that was the problem but when I turn the unit on it has given aname to the maps I dowloaded with the first city and the last on my route and some in between.

One thought. Having installed the newer map version, have you also re-calculated the routes either on computer and downloaded them to the 2610, or had the unit re-calculate the routes? The roads will be a little different from one version to another...

I found that you have to recalcuate the route in Mapsource. What I do is to set Mapsource to be using the ver. you've loaded. The open the routes tab and recalcuate each route. Then send them to the 2610. That works.
Also if you don't have good reception you'll jump around. I use an external antenna which works much better.
