When it gets hot, sometimes the screen either doesn't respond or acts like I am randomly pressing it. Views change spontaneously and it becomes impossible to navigate.
I was hoping to get a new Lowrance because I love the software (more accurately, I hate some things about other companies' software).
I'm not going to spend the kind of money required to buy a new Lowrance, it's just not reasonable considering how out of date they now are.
I don't understand why Garmin units will not let you touch the screen on the map and easily add the point you touched as a detour. Or do they? From what I've seen they don't.
Also, does anyone know if there is a GPS out there that will easily sync addresses with my outlook? I hate to think of re-adding the 500 or so addresses I've added over the years, it would be so much quicker just to sync in Outlook addresses.
What else... I really don't need much else - I don't care about music playing, I do want a large screen like the 500C. It seems like having a hard drive is a bad idea in terms of moving parts, though the iWay never had a problem. Traffic, not important. Sound/FM transmitter, not important.
I've got an iPhone 3G - I'm wishing they would hurry up and come out with real navigation for that - hopefully my iWay will last long enough for that to happen...
Anyway sorry for the rambling, I just figured someone here might have a suggestion for me.

You can't. Lowrance never made them available outside the factory and now has no more parts available anyway. Part and parcel of the fact that Lowrance was sold to a multi-national conglomerate and dropped all automotive GPS products at that time. |

Hey! I had a techie friend take the 500c apart and clean it, but it is still having the same screen problem. It is intermittent, so I'm pretty sure it can be fixed (if I tap it hard on the top, it will work again...briefly). I'm guessing there's a loose connection somewhere. Anybody know a good next step? My friend has moved away, so he's not able to check it again.
I picked up a Motorola Motonav TN765T last week; it's a nice GPS, but it lacks the 'seriousness' that I need for driving in Toronto (I go to approx 20 appointments a day for work), so I'm disappointed overall. I might write up a review for it on the forum, to give my opinion on the specifics. |

That seems to suggest that the HD is replaceable with solid state
If you don't want to worry about the HD failing again, you can just replace it with a Transcend 32GB model.
You'll need to heat the case around the heat sink to get the adhesive to release so you can drop the unit out of the case.
The other major problem with the units (besides the screen debris issue, which can plague any brand of unit used on the bike) is the touch screen failing. I found a guy in Hong Kong who thinks he has a source for replacement displays, so we might have some good news on that front.
Lowrance rejected my request this week for the schematics for these units ("even though they're discontinued, the technical information remains the proprietary property of Navico/Lowrance"), so our ability to repair them is limited.
I have not seen any good iWay sites on the Internet, either. |

I love my old iway - Has any one ever figured out how to transfer the disk drive to solid state ?
Is there a service I where I can have that done ? |

Jon_GWG: I tried your link, but it appears to be dead. My iway 500c is having some serious problems; basically, I have to press the screen really hard (or punch it!) to get it to work. Sometimes it works perfectly; most of the time it gives me problems. I'm thinking it is dirty inside, or it has a loose connection. I really love this gps, and I don't want to give up on it. I don't have the tools or tech-knowledge to (confidently) take it apart, and I've had a really hard time finding someone in my city who fixes gps touch-screens. Any help would be appreciated! |

Turn on safety mode as it will only display the map while navigating, You will have to turn off the sound but you can use it. Worked for me till I sent it in. |

When the iWay 500c first came out, there were a lot of these that suffered from this phantom-pressing symptom, including mine. I got mine replaced under warranty but I suspect the problem was a design issue.
A detailed and difficult repair method would be to take the case-screws out (small torx screws around the perimeter of the rear case) and gently separate the case-halves. Disconnect the cables and separate the halves completely. Depending on age, there could be one or more soldered cpper foil tape segments which might have to be unsoldered to release the circuit board from the screen and access the hold-down screws.
I suspect the mounting of the screen to the front bezel is too tight and could benefit from paper or plastic spacers to give the touch-screen some extra clearance. It's not a job for the faint of heart though.
Another suggestion is to take something like a business card and gently work it between the front bezel and touch-screen. Work the card around the permeter of the screen to clean out any dust, dirt and crud that may have built up between the bezel and screen. Relatively easy and might help. |

I'll try it, but I doubt that will help, as the heat issue tends to happen when the unit is first turned on. So while lowering the brightness will cause the heat level to increase by less, it starts too hot and turning it on will only make it hotter... |
